Referees penalize Texans' Kris Boyd while he excitedly shoves coach Frank Ross, a breakdown
What Happened
In the highly anticipated matchup between the Houston Texans and the Kansas City Chiefs, the opening kickoff sets the stage for an electrifying sequence of events. As the Chiefs return the kickoff, Texans cornerback Kris Boyd #17 is right in the middle of the action, chasing down the ball carrier. Unfortunately, he gets blocked from behind, but refuses to give up, sprinting back into the play and making a fantastic tackle, even stripping the ball loose. Fired up by his effort, Boyd races to the Texans' sideline, excited to celebrate with his coaches and teammates. However, his celebrations quickly turn chaotic as he removes his helmet and begins shoving defensive coach Frank Ross. Clearly misunderstanding the situation, Boyd believes the Texans have recovered the fumble, and he's trying to energize the team, not express anger. But the referees see things differently, penalizing Boyd for the unsportsmanlike conduct of taking off his helmet. This gives the Chiefs excellent field position to start their opening drive. When asked about the incident after the game, Boyd explains, "I wasn't shoving nobody. I was trying to shake everybody in because I thought that was, what I said, a turnover." He goes on to say that when he realized the Chiefs had recovered the ball, his coach pulled him aside and calmly explained the penalty. Despite the early miscue, the Texans' defense stands tall, forcing the Chiefs to settle for a field goal on their opening possession. While the emotional outburst from Boyd didn't help the team's cause, his effort and hustle on the play are commendable. As the game unfolds, both teams will need to keep their composure and focus if they hope to emerge victorious in this crucial AFC matchup.

This one is brought to you by DraftKings.
We got the Chiefs returning the opening kickoff,
and number 17 is right there.
He's got a beat on him.
Right in the middle of your screen, number 17.
Got a beat on him.
He's first one downfield, but he gets blocked up from behind.
Thought he was going to make a great play.
Gets blocked.
Guy goes right by him.
So now he's probably upset about it because he's caught downfield.
The play's passed him.
It looks like he was about to get tackled, and he was out of it.
But now he's free, and now it's really bad.
And now 17 is getting back into our shot top right,
and he's going to chase him all the way down,
and he's going to get the tackle,
and he's also going to strip the ball loose.
So he's fired up because he got beat.
He runs to the sideline.
He thinks they recovered the ball.
Coach is yelling at him.
What are you doing?
He took his helmet off.
He says, get the fuck.
He pushes him.
He's like, you see that?
Coach, you see what I just did?
Let's go.
Let's go, Coach.
We did it.
What a way to start the game.
Coach is looking at him like, yo, yo, dude, yo, hey, hey.
Hey, what's the matter with you?
You just got us a fucking penalty.
Calm down.
See that face?
He's looking at him like, what are you doing?
Calm down.
Because they didn't recover the ball.
The Chiefs recovered the ball,
and he got a 15-yard penalty for taking his helmet off,
so now they have a great field position.
That's not to say it wasn't a great play.
He was out of the play.
He ran back into the play, got the tackle, stripped the ball loose.
All of that should be celebrated, but probably in a milder manner.
Coach is like, hey, man, hey, chill the fuck out, all right?
Chill out about it.
You can't do that.
You just can't.
Again, great.
I love you stayed with it.
I love you got the ball loose.
I wish we would have recovered it.
You got to stay on the field.
And, boy,
it is like, okay, all right, I got you.
It's my bad.
It's my bad.
My bad, Coach.
I got you.
What do the Chiefs do with such great field position to open the game?
Well, they get stopped right away, so that's good.
And then on second and 11, they get stopped again.
Blown up.
Little buddy pass.
Boom, boom, bobble, bobble, bam, bobble, bobble, bam.
Third and 11 now, and I don't know.
They just definitely don't convert this.
My memory.
And, yeah, they go for the end zone.
Don't get it, so they're going to have to kick.
They get three points.
It wasn't the most damaging thing, but it also wasn't great.
Now, oh, no, man.
Now, after the game, obviously, the reporters had to ask questions,
so Will Kunkel asked him what everyone was wondering,
and his answer is pretty funny.
I wasn't shoving nobody.
I was trying to shake everybody in because I thought that was,
what I said, a turnover.
When I looked up, I seen white and everybody pointing the other direction,
so I was trying, motion's going, and I threw my helmet, and I'm just lit.
I always do that, but it was a bad play, and he told me that,
and then he grabbed me and pulled me to the side,
and was like, hey, like, that wasn't nothing good, you know.
Like, I see, I know what you was going through,
but that was actually a penalty, and when they just, like I said,
he told me when they just lock in, you know, it was just six seconds.
We got a whole ballgame to play.
It was just six seconds, whole ballgame.
So everyone thought he was shoving the coach out of anger,
but actually he was fired up and trying to celebrate,
like, dap everyone up on the sidelines,
because he thought he just, like, changed the game in the first six seconds.
It was one of those celebratory mosh pit shoves,
not I'm mad at you shoves,
and the coach's face just being so confused.
It was hilarious.
And that's that.
