What Happened

With 16.5 seconds left, the Cleveland State Vikings hold a narrow 2-point lead over the Wright State Raiders. In a critical late-game situation, the Vikings are looking to secure their 9th straight victory and stay undefeated in Horizon League play. Wright State guard Trey Calvin brings the ball up the court, driving to the basket and kicking it out to an open teammate for a potential game-tying 3-pointer. However, the shot falls short and Cleveland State's 6'8" forward Deshon Parker grabs the rebound. With the clock winding down, Parker quickly outlets the ball up the floor to point guard Tre Gomillion. Gomillion races up the court, but is closely guarded by the Raiders' defense. With just 5 seconds remaining, Gomillion spots an open Yahel Hill near the baseline and lofts a high pass in his direction. Soaring through the air, the 6'8" Hill elevates and catches the alley-oop pass with authority, slamming it home as the buzzer sounds. The Cleveland State bench erupts in celebration as the Vikings pull off the last-second victory, 67-65. "That was just a great play by our guys at the end," says Cleveland State head coach Dennis Gates. "Tre made a perfect pass and Yahel finished it off with authority. I'm proud of the effort and composure our team showed in a tight game like this." Wright State head coach Scott Nagy expresses his disappointment, stating "We just didn't execute defensively on that final possession. We had an opportunity to get a stop and send it to overtime and we let them get an easy look at the basket. It's a tough one to swallow, but we'll learn from it and come back stronger." The win extends Cleveland State's impressive streak to 9 games, as they continue their quest for the Horizon League regular season title. For Wright State, the defeat stings, but they'll look to rebound in the rematch just one week later.
