defensive plays you'll ever see in
baseball, but first we got to tackle
some of the fun storylines that happened
earlier in the inning. Brought to you by
Create. Juan Soto flashes bunt with the
runner on first, pulls it back. Strike
one, strike two. Was that outside? Maybe
it clipped. That one's high. Two and
two. Strike three. Soto says, "Ah, Ron,
I want to take a look at that." Ron
Kulpa says, "All right. All right, let's
take a look. Fine. Let's take a look.
Here we go."
Boom. Strike. I'm right, you're wrong.
One of my first breakdowns ever. It was
my first non-Yankees breakdown ever is
Ron Kulpa telling the manager of the
Astros, A.J. Hinch, "I can do whatever I
want." That's the type of umpire he is.
You got to love it. He's got an ego.
Now, Bichette comes up. 999 career hits,
a runner on first, two outs, and Lugo's
just pumping strikes. Just filling up
the zone. O2. Top rail, foul back.
Another one in the zone. Ron says, "No."
Catcher says, "I think so, Ron. Think
you botched this one." Ron Kulpa says,
"Okay. All right, you're getting
nervous, aren't you? You're getting
nervous because bam, I'm Ron Kulpa and
you're not." That's a ball. And now, Ron
Kulpa has the freedom to do whatever the
hell he wants. Two calls, two
challenges, two highlights for old Ron.
Show it again. Show them how good I was.
Meanwhile, Bichette sends the breaking
ball back up the middle. Milestone hit
for him and keeps the inning going. Gets
to first base and the first base coach,
like a good guy, is saying, "Hey. Hey,
who's got that ball? Hey, don't throw
that ball away. That's a milestone hit."
Matheny in the Royals dugout, he's like,
"Ah,
I got it."
I have the ball.
It's going to cost you. Yep. Yep. It's
going to cost you.
Pay me some money, I'll give it to you.
Yeah, I'm holding on to this baby. Coach
is like, "Hey, give it to that guy."
He's like, "Oh, okay. All right. Guess
this guy's going to make all my money."
That guy's like, "What do they want?" He
says, "I don't I don't know. They were
calling for it. I have no idea what it
is. It's hit number 1,000." All right,
the inning continues. And now Lindor's
up and that's a ball off and that's
probably a ball in, but Ron Kulpa says,
"I dare you. You've been wrong twice.
You're not challenging me. This zone's
expanded. This game's going quick." The
2-1, right down the middle. The 2-2.
Ooh, he did not go. The 3-2, way high.
Strike three. Challenge it, I dare you.
You want to lose all of yours in the
first inning? Don't think so. Lindor's
like, "Okay." Damn, Lugo is like
And then the play of action. One out
away from getting out of the inning.
Bottom of the first, filling up the
zone. That's a ball out. That Okay,
that's a strike. Anything close.
Anything close. That's put in play.
Lugo's going to be the hero. Bounces it
to first. Oh my god, it gets by him. All
the runners keep going. We're chasing it
down. Caglianone fires it to no one.
The runners are like, "Let's keep
going." Hey, fire it to the catcher. He
wasn't ready. Let's keep going. Bench
has himself a little league home run.
Three errors on one play and the Mets
are laughing. They're young and they're
having fun. Look at this dugout. Lindor
doesn't care he just struck out on a bad
call anymore. He's all smiles. Oh, look
at the smiles in the dugout. It's the
happiest the Mets have been in weeks.
They just gifted us runs. Look at this.
What fools. We're going to win this one.
They just gifted us runs. Not happy.
Lugo's not happy. Like he's like, "Oh,
boy. That stinks." This fan, he's not
really happy, but he's like, "I I'll
take it." Yeah.
I'll take it. Sure, why not?
And he is he looking at me? Oh, hey,
what's up? We got the cameras on me?
Yep, just oh, hey, still look oh, hey.
Okay. Stop spying on me. I'm tired. I
just ran a whole football field. Here's
the play again.
Lugo, off the bump with the quickness.
The off-balance throw, he's going to
bounce it to his first baseman who
misses it.
I mean, it's a tough play, a tough
bounce. This throw by Caglione They call
him Jack because his his initials are J
A C. His name's not Jack. That's like
our good friend Dar. Hey, how about
that? This throw is hilarious. I laugh
every time I watch it. I don't know who
he's throwing it to. I think the
catcher. He just turned and fired and
did not have
any awareness. You know, sometimes
outfielders just turn and fire and
you're like, "Damn, how was he
pinpoint?" He just knows where the bases
are. Jack doesn't. And at this point,
Lugo and Bobby Witt are both telling
him, "Hey, get the out at third. Who
cares about that runner? It's the first
inning. Just throw it." Look, they're
pointing. "Just throw it. Just throw
it."
And he says, "No, man, let's get the out
at home." Catcher's like, "Oh, I was
with them.
I was with them. I thought we were going
to go to third there and that allows
another run to score all the way around
the base paths. And a painful part of
this is Lugo makes a decent play. Like
he he should bounce that ball because
the first baseman has a better chance of
blocking a bounce ball than if he throws
it high or way wide. Like this ball
should be, if not caught, blocked.
And it would have been an out if he
scoops it. I think that gets scooped
more often than not in baseball.
Uh, that's a bummer. And then for it to
unravel
Woo, look at Benge around the bases.
Hustling down first to beat out the
play, beats it out, quickly reads it,
goes to second. He's like, "Great, this
is fun. I'll catch my breath and we're
scoring." He's like, "Oh, should I go
the No, no, no, don't get greedy. No,
no, no, let's do it. Let's do it. Let's
do it. Let's do it. Oh, I should Oh,
okay. Now, oh, wow." And then all the
way home. Crazy. Now, I'm going to catch
my breath and here's a fun visual and
the radio called the play.
>> lineup. The pitch.
Chop softly left side of the mound. Lugo
off the bump, fields off balance little
first. It skips by Caglianone into foul
territory. Ewing had already gotten to
third. He scampers into score the game's
first run. Caglianone throws it wildly
to the backstop. Now, the shortstop to
third takes off for home. Watkins' relay
gets by Jensen all the way off the
backstop. Here comes Bench all the way
around.
>> I like the right fielder Tolbert on this
play. First, he's going to see the throw
and just he can't control his reaction.
He's like, "What the hell was that?" And
then as the play continues, he's just
going to get in front of Jack Caglianone
and be like, "Dude, I'll handle any
other overthrow."
Look how far he runs in. I don't know if
you've seen a play where the right
fielder ends up fielding a ball
basically in the infield. That's the
right fielder who ends up with the ball
right there. I don't know if you'll see
that. I don't know. And to make it sting
even worse, the very next inning the
Mets say, "Watch how it's done." Senga
to Young, basically the same play. And
they get it done. Now, the difference is
you got the first baseman for the Mets,
he switches his feet, Young, and I don't
even know what's I think
Caglianone is more
normal, but he misses it. He's going
backhand. You got glove on different
hands and Young for the Mets lets the
ball travel. The bounce that Senga gave
was way
shorter and less of a short hop, but
very similar plays, different results.
So, the Mets finally catch a break.
They get gifted some runs. Surely they
go on
to win and not get embarrassed for once.
Ah.
