Click timestamps to jump to that momentelimination game between Auburn and NC
State. This breakdown is brought to you
by Shady Rays. Now, Auburn scored eight
runs in the first inning. We're in the
eighth inning here. It's 17-13. NC
State's clawing their way back and this
is called a fair ball and the batter is
out and everyone's a little perplexed.
They don't like it. Takes his helmet
off. Coach comes out. He's like, "What's
going on?" He's looking around. the
umpires are going to get together like
did what did you see? What did I see?
What did you see? Manager is a coach or
manager in college. He's out. He's like
oh. And he's going to ask him. He's like
what? He's like well it's a fair ball.
He's like um uh the ball hit him in the
foot. He's like so what are you guys
talking about? My god. Oh this is don't
need this. This man is head coach Elliot
Avent and he is a legend and this is his
last game before retiring. He served as
head coach for 30 seasons, the longest
tenure in program history. He's got 1,13
wins at NC State, 1,327
total all-time program record. He led
the Wolfpack to the NCA tournament in 22
of his 29 seasons. 40 All-Americans
under his watch. 137 players drafted.
Holy smokes. It's his last game and he
wants to go out with a bang. He doesn't
want to go out arguing calls.
Unfortunately, he's wrong. That is a
fair ball. From the other angle, it
looked like it might have hit him. I
think the player has to know it didn't
hit him. It just hits the front of the
plate and goes into fair territory. So
they got that call correct, although
they were mad about it and it lingered.
Now we go to the bottom of the ninth.
Two outs away from the season ending.
Strike one fouled back. Ball the 1-1.
Strike two. Gets him chasing THE ONE,
TWO. BAM. CALLS him out on strike three.
He doesn't like that call. No one likes
that call on NC State side. They're
saying that's low. That's down. And
right
there, I kind of always look at the
batter's eyes. His eyes are looking kind
of straight ahead. So maybe that's when
it's in front of him. Is that at knee
level? Is it a little low?
I don't know. I don't know. I don't
know. Nobody knows it's hard. [ __ ]
awful. Coach A doesn't like it. Number
six doesn't like it. He tosses his gum.
Now they're down to their last out. He's
just m
Oh, it's a shame. That's a shame. One
out away from season being over. From
career being over. Strike one. Swing and
strike. Two. Fouls it back. Stays alive.
Next pitch, that's a ball outside. Next
pitch, that's a ball low. Next pitch,
it's a ball outside. We've worked the
count full. Let's keep this game going.
All right, pitcher's going to think
about it. He's going to step to the back
of the mound. He's going to clear his
cleats, clear his mind. The batter gets
ready, touches the bat, steps into the
plate. Catcher says, "Hey, hey, blue,
blue, blue, blue. He's taking too long.
Taking long." Blue says, "Damn it,
you're right. Pitch clock violation on
the batter. That's strike three. Game's
over."
Why'd you make me make that call? Huh?
Batter can't believe it. He's looking
around perplexed. Uh Elliot's mad. What?
What are YOU DOING? [ __ ] HORSE [ __ ]
You blew the You blew the [ __ ] call
at home plate. You blew the [ __ ]
strike call and now you [ __ ] YOU GOTA
YOU GOT YOU GOT to How do you call that?
That's horhit. That's [ __ ] horseshit.
You'll never get another World Series
game. [ __ ] horseshit. That's [ __ ]
horseshit, Travis. And before he has to
be cordial, he's just gonna toss the hat
because he's angry. And then pretty
funny, he has to just go and dap up the
other coaches who I'm sure have known
him a long time. And they rever him
maybe. And he's just going to get hugs
and say, "Okay, great job, great season,
great career, great life.
Love sharing the field with you." just
happy and smiles and big hugs and
cordialness,
which is a funny juxosition. How mad he
was about all the plays earlier, man.
Okay, there's a big hug in the dugout
and some more hugs in the dugout. And
the batter, he's still perplexed. What
happened? What happened? Well, I'll tell
you what happened. Here's the pitch
clock. You got to be engaged with the
pitcher and ready to go by 8 seconds or
more. So you can see in green top left,
first pitch of that bat, he was engaged
and ready to go at 18 seconds on the
clock. And then top right, he's engaged
already at 16 seconds. And then another
pitch, bottom left, engaged already at
14 seconds. And then the next one, top
of middle, he's engaged already at 12
seconds. And we keep going. And now
we've got another one. Bottom middle, 9
seconds, cutting it close. Bottom right
cuts it really close. We can see he's
engaged by 8 seconds. And over the
camera and in the very middle of frame
is the pitch in question where he is
just it's egregious. I mean, what are
you doing, kid? There's rules. The
umpire doesn't want to call these ticky
tac calls. There's rules. The catcher
calls you out on it. You got to abide.
We're at 7 seconds here. You haven't
even looked up. It's the biggest pitch.
It's the season ending pitch. Where's
your head at? Where's your head at?
Here's the replay again. Just solo. And
he gets got probably by the pitcher
taking so long cuz the pitcher had kind
of worked fast and then all a sudden the
pitcher worked slow on this one. And
yeah, I mean by the time this strikes
eight. So here he has to be engaged and
ready to hit with a pitcher. You may not
like the rule, but them's the rules and
everyone's got to do it. So, it's a
tough way to lose, but I really I think
I think if the catcher doesn't notice
it, the um gives them some leniency cuz
it is a big moment. But once the other
team is like, "Yo, blue," it's like,
"Oh,
