Jeter Downs thought he hit a home run on this routine fly out, a breakdown
What Happened
In a 1-1 World Baseball Classic game between Netherlands and Nicaragua, Jeter Downs came up on a full count, said “Give it to me,” then hit the pitch and started celebrating before realizing it was a routine fly out that did not reach the warning track. Later, Nicaragua loaded the bases in the seventh without hitting a ball out of the infield, but the pitcher escaped after getting a groundout on a 93 mph fastball. Downs was also involved in the bottom of the seventh, snagging a ball hit by Didi Gregorius and throwing to first for the third out.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentThis was the first great, great game of
the World Baseball Classic this year,
which has already given us so many good
moments and a lot of fun stuff. It's
been amazing. This breakdown's brought
to you by Shady Rays. We've got a 1-1
game, Netherlands versus Nicaragua, and
Jeter Downs is up. Two and one is the
count. Swings through a breaking ball
there. Two strikes. That didn't really
break into the zone. So, now we got a
full count. He says, "Give it to me.
Give it to me." Gets it. Same pitch he
swung through. This time he hammers it
starts celebrating, turns, and realizes
didn't even reach the warning track. You
know, what? I thought I had that. What?
How did that not get out?
He thought he got all of that. Kind of
looked like end of the bat to me, but
didn't get all of it. Anyway, let's
watch the top of the seventh even though
Jeter Downs isn't involved. It's just
fun baseball. We've got softball slash
swing. Just put it in play and make
things happen. Bogarts tries to bare
hand it and comes up with nothing. Watch
this slow-mo replay of it just going in
and then sweep. Just slipping out like a
bar of soap. Can't make it. Then, we've
got a quick out. So, now there's two
outs, runner on first. Ground ball to
short. Easy play. Kind of doesn't
put any rush into it. Just doesn't rush
it at all. So, that's going to be
another infield single. No error or
anything on that play. Now, you've got
runners on first and second, two outs.
And again, we're going to get another
ground ball this time to Didi, and he
comes up with nothing. Another great
slow-mo. Just snow cone, end of the
glove, and can't hang on. Brings it up
to grab it with his hand, and the ball
isn't there. So, no ball has left the
infield. They've got bases loaded, two
outs. And then we've got this. The
pitcher kind of baits baits the runners.
People were screaming, "Balk! Balk!" You
see them
That What is that? What just something
you don't really see, but watch his back
foot. It does step off the rubber first,
and then he just kind of like I think
he's trying to trick them
and see if anyone will jump to get them
out. Bizarre move. I've never seen that.
I wonder if that's ever worked if we go
back and watch that pitcher. Bases are
loaded. The first pitch is going to be
low. The next pitch I mean, that is that
is a pitch dying to get hit. Didn't get
hit. One and one. And then tries to get
him to chase it. Now, it's three and
one. Now, he says, "That's right. Bring
me the fastball in the zone. Bring me
that fastball in the zone." Gets the
fastball in the zone, 93 mph. Grounds it
out. They make the play there. Let's go!
Let's go!
He gets out of it. Okay, let's continue
on to the Jeter Downs story. It's bottom
of the seventh inning. Didi Gregorius is
up. There's runner on first base.
There's two outs. And Didi's going to
get a hold of one, but it is brought
back
into the infield and thrown to first for
the third out by Jeter Downs. Look at
that play.
The ball is past him.
Snags it. Gets to his feet. Tosses it.
His first baseman loves him. "Oh!"
Now, he's up in the top of the eighth
with two outs, runner on first. First
pitch, below the zone. The 1-0 pitch,
dead red, 88 mph. Gets all of this one.
Home run to give Nicaragua the lead.
They've never won a game in the World
Baseball Classic. Never have they won a
game. He thought he had a home run last
time. He has one this time. He's
screaming around the bases. The crowd's
going nuts. They're getting their first
win. It's happening. It's coming true.
Watch this.
Oh, bam! Just nothing on it. This time
he watches it. He doesn't celebrate
early. He makes sure. He's got eyes on
the ball. He's tracking it.
Loses the gum. Crowd is going nuts.
These crowds have been amazing in the
World Baseball Classic. It's been a lot
of fun. And this game felt like the best
upset we were going to see. So, now all
they need is three outs. They get their
first ever win, and the Jeter Downs
story gets written, and he is the hero.
First batter,
takes strike one, takes strike two,
takes strike three. First out. Just
didn't really couldn't pull the trigger
on any of those. Next batter, he's going
to put one into the air, and it's out.
Okay, one more out. Let's take in the
moment. Let's focus.
Just make your pitches. One more out.
Fastball, fouled back.
Another fastball. One more strike. One
more strike. Make your pitch. Outside
fastball. Oh, no. End of the bat, little
flare. It's going to drop in. Finds
grass.
Netherlands are alive.
He's upset about it, but he made his
pitch, you know. Flares happen. Okay,
one more out.
One more out for their first ever win.
The first pitch, below the zone. Low.
The 1-0. They give him the strike. 1-1.
Put in play. Can you believe it? A
baseball.
A flare off the end of the bat and a
baseball.
What is going on? He can't believe it.
Are you kidding me? What's happening?
It's in the third baseman's glove. No!
It ricochets over his head, drops in for
a double. Coach comes out, says, "Dude,
don't worry about that. You can't
control that. You made your pitches."
Dusty's thinking, "Come on now. Let's
just finish it off. All right."
Clear the mechanism. Here we go. Ozzie
Albies steps up. We just need some
strikes. One more out.
First pitch.
Fastball in the zone. Absolutely
clobbered for a three-run home run. A
bloop, a base, and a blast. And
Netherlands walks it off. The first
walk-off in World Baseball Classic
history.
Absolutely smokes it. Says, "Let me get
the chain out so I look good as I run
around these bases. Let's go!"
Woo! Spikes the helmet. Rounds third.
Gathers his high fives. Comes to home
plate. Steps on it. We got water bottles
being poured on heads. We got a party on
the third base side. Now, watch the
replay from this angle. It's not as fun.
It's actually it's a little bit more uh
devastating. Cuz this camera shot's
going to stay with the pitcher.
And
no.
Can't believe it. And there's a reason
I'm showing this shot. It's not just to
put salt in the wound, but
there's a beautiful moment at the very
end
where he's just twirling his thumbs.
Just
I mean, I can't just awful things going
through his brain.
It's That's That's a lonely, lonely
feeling, and his teammates understand
it.
Even though they're crushed, too,
they see their guy out there on the
mound
just sitting in it
feeling the moment. And they're going to
come up to him, grab him, and get him
out of it. First, the grounds crew's
going to come. He's got some stuff to
clean up. He's got a job to do. Everyone
understands. Then his teammates, they're
going to make their way to the mound,
say, "Come on, dude. Get up. You're
good. You're good."
We got you. Come on now. Here we go.
They walk him back as a team. Hold your
head up. Thank God being here.
Having the ability to play. And he does.
I don't know. I just thought it was cool
to see all like, you know, three of his
teammates come at the same time. Jeter
Downs kicks the garbage can.
Thought it was going to be his game.
He's going to ink his name into the
history books of Nicaraguan baseball.
Delivered their first win in World
Baseball Classic. They didn't. Instead,
it was Ozzie Albies. He's hanging out
with Kenley Jansen. He gets a Gatorade
bath. He gets one Gatorade bath, and
then they decided they didn't get him
enough. He's doing his interview. Come
back, hit him with another. Now, he's
drenched and having fun. What scenes
from the World Baseball Classic. Got to
feel for these fans. Our guy Joe McFly
was in the arena. He went to their side
of the stadium to celebrate with them.
>> [screaming]
>> Ended up filming
just heartbreak. Oh my god, I feel so
bad for Nicaragua.
This crowd is stunned, bro.
