What Happened

In the top of the eighth inning of a tied game between the San Francisco Giants and the Pittsburgh Pirates, Giants outfielder Austin Slater steps up to the plate. The first pitch to Slater is called a strike by the home plate umpire. The catcher hesitates briefly, as if questioning the call. The next pitch is also ruled a strike, prompting more confusion from the catcher. The 1-1 pitch catches the bottom of the zone, but the catcher again appears unsure of the umpire's decision to call it a strike. Frustrated, the catcher slaps his glove and asks the umpire for a new baseball, spiking the old one to the ground. The count now 3-1, the next pitch is right down the middle, but Slater fouls it back. The umpire then calls the next pitch high, much to the dismay of the Pirates dugout. Pirates manager Derek Shelton emerges from the dugout, yelling at the umpire to "wake up" and angrily arguing that the previous three pitches were all strikes. The umpire ejects Shelton from the game, who continues to shout and gesticulate before walking off the field. "You gotta be f***ing kidding me," Shelton exclaims. "That's three pitches you missed!" The umpire calmly waits as Shelton berates him, saying the first pitch and the one to the previous batter were strikes, while the other borderline call was "right on the border." Shelton is clearly frustrated by the perceived missed calls, which he believes have cost his team. The heated exchange between the manager and umpire underscores the high stakes and intensity of the close game between these two National League teams fighting for playoff position.
