Joe Musgrove throws the first no-hitter in Padres history, a breakdown
What Happened
San Diego Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove makes history on April 9, 2021, throwing the first no-hitter in franchise history. Musgrove, a native of the San Diego area, grew up a Padres fan and had attended games at Qualcomm Stadium and Petco Park over the years. Now, in his second start for his hometown team, the 28-year-old Musgrove delivers a masterful performance, striking out 10 batters and recording 10 groundouts en route to the milestone achievement. Musgrove's catcher, Victor Caratini, plays a key role, guiding the pitcher through the historic outing. Caratini had previously caught the last no-hitter in MLB, for Alec Mills and the Chicago Cubs in 2020. Musgrove credits Caratini's experience and familiarity with his pitches, including a slider, curveball and cutter, as crucial factors in navigating the Texas Rangers' lineup. As Musgrove enters the ninth inning, the tension builds, with the Padres dugout and the crowd at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, holding their breath. Musgrove works carefully, mixing his pitches and inducing weak contact. After a brief scare on a line drive, he gets the final out on a grounder to shortstop Ha-Seong Kim, who fires the ball to first baseman Eric Hosmer for the historic victory. The Padres players erupt in celebration, jumping and embracing Musgrove on the mound. Manager Jayce Tingler, proud of his pitcher's accomplishment, claps from the dugout. Musgrove is presented with the game ball, a cherished memento of his landmark achievement. In the clubhouse, the pitcher and catcher hug again, savoring the moment together. "I remember my first ball I got thrown to me in the stands was from Mark Kotsay," Musgrove recalls. "Jake Peavy was my favorite pitcher growing up, so the hometown kid gets traded to San Diego in his second start and throws a no-hitter, the first for the franchise." This historic performance by Joe Musgrove, the Padres' first no-hitter in their 53-year existence, is a moment of pure joy for the team and its dedicated fan base. It's a testament to Musgrove's talent, the guidance of his catcher and the passion of the Padres faithful, who have long awaited this momentous occasion.

and have as much fun as joe musgrove's
about to have
right here because he just threw
the first no-hitter in padres history
they were the only
active mlb franchise without
a no-hitter and joe musgrove grew up
a padres fan here he is talking about it
we would go pretty often at qualcomm but
by the time they went to petco we had
season tickets
um and we were out in right field right
above the right field wall
i remember my first ball i got thrown to
me in the stands was from mark kotse
you know jake peavy was my it was my
favorite pitcher growing up so the
hometown
kid gets traded to san diego in his
second start throws a no-hitter the
first for the franchise
here's a little inning by inning
breakdown of the pitches he had 10
strikeouts a lot of them are in the
first half of the game
he had 10 outs on the ground you see
those come
a lot at the end of the game when he
wanted quick outs and then he had seven
outs in the air
fly balls lineouts all to right field
basically
his catcher victor carantini guided him
through it
he gave him a lot of credit also victor
carantini caught the last
no-hitter in mlb back-to-back no-hitters
on two different teams
he caught alec mills last year for the
cubs he gets traded to the padres
because he's you darvish's personal
catcher
which musgrove says probably helped him
out a lot in this game
you know he's done such a good job and i
think part of it's him coming
with darvish you know having so many
pitches to choose from and
you know knowing how to navigate lineups
and use all those weapons efficiently
and
you know the slider the break i think
the last three innings i don't think i
threw a single fastball i think we were
just emptying the tank with sliders and
curveballs he says a lot of pitches he
means it he threw
six different pitches in this game in
the first couple innings they were
throwing
everything at the batters and then as he
said they took away the fastball
and they just went slider curveball
heavy cutter first pitch to get some
ground balls there's a breakdown of it
30 sliders pretty cool i love when they
give credit to the catcher so let's go
to the ninth inning
and watch how it broke down all the
pressure in the world he goes a little
slider outside he's down in the count
then he goes right in the zone that's a
nasty pitch
then he goes in the zone again just
trying to get it in play
that's just kind of a scary play because
it's a line drive
deep breath padres fans in the stands in
texas deep
breath okay strike one little slider
another really nasty slider for strike
two now this guy's having some nice
collapse
carrantini wants that one on the ground
he doesn't get it down they go again
he gets that one down got to field it
himself tag umpire says and he ran out
of the base path anyway
so double out and now we're dancing and
now we're dancing and now we're saying
let's go because one out away from
franchise history look at that stupid
pitch
that's fun that's a fun pitch
throws it again gets the ground ball to
the shortstop kim
fires it the first there you go hell
yeah carrantini excited muskra i've
excited
everyone in san diego excited they've
come so close so many times and have not
had a no-hitter
look at the leaps from the players
running in hosmer and paddock going
crazy i love these little kids in the
front row
drinking it in screaming and yelling i
thought kids didn't like baseball
anymore man fred come on
all the way up there whoa
some padres fans and then shout out the
social media manager
running onto the field getting the shot
for the fans at home
you know i love my camera people just a
big old celebration in the middle of the
field
and then proud dad claps from tingler
just proud you know i trusted you
profar gives him the ball you want that
he says yeah i think i
i think i do i think i do want that one
of the padres are going to steal it then
more hugs
more catcher pitcher hugs but they
hugged again in the clubhouse too
take a picture with the ball man enjoy
