Joe West calls two balks on Mark Buehrle and then ejects him, a breakdown
What Happened
In a 2010 game between the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs, veteran umpire Joe West makes a series of controversial calls that ultimately lead to the ejection of White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen and starting pitcher Mark Buehrle. The tension begins in the first inning when West calls a balk on Buehrle, despite the pitcher's standard pickoff motion appearing legal to the naked eye. Buehrle protests the call, drawing a line in the dirt to illustrate his delivery, but West takes offense to this and warns the pitcher not to show him up. Guillen then comes out of the dugout to defend his player, but West quickly ejects him, ignoring Guillen's pleas that he was not arguing the balk call itself. As the game moves to the third inning, West calls another balk on Buehrle and this time the pitcher reacts angrily, slamming his glove to the ground in frustration. West wastes no time tossing Buehrle from the game as well, with the White Sox manager and pitcher both being ejected within the first three innings. Throughout the heated exchanges, West is seen grinning and basking in the attention, seemingly enjoying his ability to exert his authority over the players and managers. Fellow umpire Angel Hernandez even comes over to defend West, telling Guillen to "leave Joe West alone" and praising the veteran's leadership. With both the White Sox manager and ace pitcher ejected, the game continues in a tense atmosphere, the players and fans clearly frustrated by West's handling of the situation. The umpire's actions draw heavy criticism, with many feeling he overstepped his bounds and let his ego get the better of him on the field. Ultimately, West's controversial performance in this game leads to him being fined by Major League Baseball, perhaps a sign that his behavior had crossed a line. The incident serves as a prime example of how an umpire's personal agenda can overshadow the game itself, sparking debates about the appropriate role and conduct of officials in professional sports.

standard move for lefty didn't look like
he crossed but again that angle so
Burley apparently started drawing in the
dirt and say this is where I was this
was the line and Joe West didn't like
that cuz now he's showing him up and Joe
West the only person that can talk to
Joe West is Joe West so Ozzy comes Isis
don't come out here don't come out here
Ozzy I'm talking to him so Ozzy says he
was not defending the ball call cuz what
does he know but you know he just was
defending his player cuz Joe West
shouldn't be John at him in the middle
of the game and Joe Wesson well he
shouldn't draw in the dirt Joe uh says
get out of here
get out of here Ozzy doesn't get out of
there so then he throws him out take a
good look you can see him shift his
weight to the back foot there right
really uses it a nice leg kick good
separation and then kind of a pathetic
arm throw just a terrible finish by Joe
West there now Ozzy's mad and Joe West
is he mad no he's very excited he's
gonna be on camera and he got to throw
someone out and he's just gonna start
laughing at Ozzie look at that you see
that smile right there it's all fun and
games for Joe West
you know just throwing the manager out
in the second inning you know arms
folded just a badass pose more smiles
right there just a joke and a lot of fun
and angel Hernandez his really good
competent best friend he comes over and
says yeah you leave Joe Wes alone that
dudes my goddamn idol he taught me
everything I know so Ozzy leaves and
then we go to the third inning Burley
goes for another pickoff and let's see
the move here does he cross the line I
don't know
don't argue box argue a box in the
comments load him up anyway Joe West
calls another ball right away Burley
throws his glove down Joe West loads up
he grapevines into this one look at this
plants the right swings the
BAM the arm a little better this time he
tosses burly it's the third inning of a
getaway game and then as soon as he
tosses him he turns his back and walks

so burly can't even say anything in
burly's like you tossed me out what the
hell's going on here
I have no idea what's going on then he
just folds his arms posts up damn it
feels good to be a gangsta I'm Joe West
I got a country album everyone loves me
I'm the talk of baseball
Joey West got fined for this and I think
it might have calmed him down he went on
a radio show afterwards to talk about it
I mean he was saying that the Red Sox
and the Yankees the way they played was
pathetic which you know shows clear bias
towards two teams in a league which like
umpires aren't allowed to do and then I
mean this is ridiculous so Joe West did
get fined for this game and maybe got a
little talking to
being like hey Joe quit your [ __ ] it
ain't about you this breakdown was
brought to you by my friend Jake he's a
good dancer but he sucks
