What Happened

Anthony Rizzo of the New York Yankees steps up to the plate in the bottom of the third inning with a runner on base. Rizzo is known for his ability to hit foul balls that sail deep into the stands and this at-bat is no exception. On the first pitch, Rizzo drives the ball deep to right field, but it goes foul. A pair of fans, one wearing a jersey and the other a sweatshirt and mask, scramble to try and catch the foul ball. The ball bounces off the stands and back towards the field, where Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres #25 grabs it excitedly. The sweatshirt-and-mask-wearing fan is disappointed, realizing he missed out on the chance to catch the ball. Undeterred, Rizzo steps back in and fouls off the next pitch. This time, the ball sails high into the air, again heading towards the same two fans. The sweatshirt-and-mask-wearing fan, realizing he has the height advantage, reaches up and snatches the ball out of the air as it comes back down. "What are the odds of that?" the announcer exclaims, amazed that the same two fans were targeted by consecutive foul balls. Rizzo then takes a pitch that is just off the plate and he argues good-naturedly with the umpire about the call. On the next offering, Rizzo once again hits a deep foul ball, this time to the opposite field. The two fans engaged in a brief tussle, but the sweatshirt-and-mask-wearing fan ultimately comes away with the prized souvenir. After the eventful at-bat, Rizzo pokes an opposite-field single, showing his ability to handle pitches on the outer half of the plate due to his close stance. "That's a breakdown that's probably not worth breaking down, but the foul balls went to the same spot," the announcer notes, chuckling at the unlikely sequence of events. Though the game ends in a 1-1 tie, the interaction between the two fans has created a lasting bond, as well as a bit of rivalry, that will be remembered long after the final out is recorded.
