Brewers stun Mets in playoff classic, a breakdown
What Happened
In a thrilling wild card showdown, the Milwaukee Brewers stun the New York Mets with a late-inning comeback to force a decisive Game 3. The game is tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 9th inning when 20-year-old Brewers rookie Sal Frelick steps to the plate. Frelick takes a 1-1 cutter and drives it over the fence for a game-tying solo home run, sending the Brewers' home crowd into a frenzy. The next batter, Willy Adames, doubles to put the go-ahead run on base. Mets manager Buck Showalter calls on reliever Edwin Díaz to try and keep the game tied. Díaz gets a groundout but the runner advances to third. Up steps pinch-hitter Rowdy Tellez, who battles through a tough at-bat against Díaz's breaking balls before lining a go-ahead single to give the Brewers a 4-3 lead. The Mets crowd is stunned as closer Devin Williams takes the mound for the Brewers in the top of the 9th. Williams quickly retires Rhys Hoskins and Brandon Nimmo to bring up Mets slugger Pete Alonso as the potential tying run. Alonso works a full count before Williams freezes him with a devastating changeup, sealing the Brewers' comeback victory. "That was baseball at its finest," says the excited Brewers fan. "We had the big inning, the towels are waving, the crowd is on their feet - it was just an amazing finish!" The Mets faithful are left dejected, with one fan lamenting the team's earlier baserunning miscue that could have made the difference. The series is now knotted at one game apiece, setting up a winner-take-all Game 3 between these NL East rivals. Brewers manager Craig Counsell praises his young squad's resilience, saying "We never count these guys out - they just keep battling." The stage is set for an epic conclusion to this thrilling wild card matchup.
