A wild scene unfolded late in the Cal vs. Louisiana softball game when a three-pitch rainstorm hit during the bottom of the seventh. Cal held a 1-0 lead with freshman pitcher Randy Rollin throwing a gem, but a sudden downpour turned the inning upside down. Louisiana led off with a hustle double to put the tying run on second. As the rain started, the ball became slick, and Rollin struggled to grip it. After a short delay and several attempts to swap out wet balls, chaos took over. A wild pitch allowed the tying run to score, and the assistant coach for Cal got tossed for arguing too forcefully with the umps. Then Cal’s catcher and the batter had a heated moment before the catcher got ejected for throwing her gear.
Once the rain cleared, Cal refocused in extras. After surviving the bottom of the seventh, they struck in the top of the eighth. Cal loaded the bases and pushed across two runs with aggressive baserunning and timely hitting. Number 8, a clear team leader, delivered the blow with a triple after right field misplayed a shot. Cal extended to a 3-1 lead. Rollin then finished it off with help from a diving catch in the final inning to secure the win. A brief rain squall turned one inning into a mess of ejections, errors, and rallies, but Cal held on and walked away with the win.
