Tennis player slams umpires chair with his racket, a breakdown

Alexander Zverev and Marcelo Melo faced Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliövaara in a fiery doubles match at the Mexican Open. Glasspool and Heliövaara took the first set 6–2, but Melo and Zverev bounced back to take the second 6–4. The match went to a deciding super tiebreak, where Glasspool and Heliövaara jumped out to a dominant 5–0 lead. Zverev and Melo clawed back into it, narrowing the gap to 8–6, with Zverev hitting some key shots to spark the momentum shift.

At 9–8, match point for Glasspool and Heliövaara, a contentious call went in their favor. Zverev and Melo felt the ball was out and protested hard, but the judge stood by the ruling. Replays were limited, but it looked like the ball clipped the line. On the next point, an ace sealed the match. What followed was a meltdown from Zverev. He walked over to the umpire’s chair and smashed his racket multiple times near the official’s feet, adding a final shot as he exited. The crowd was stunned, but security and officials didn’t intervene on the spot.

Despite the outburst and disqualification, Zverev still took time to sign autographs and pose for selfies. One kid even walked away with the shattered racket. A ridiculous ending to an otherwise tough-fought match, with Zverev’s temper once again raising questions about his composure on court.
