Tortorella gets ejected from the game but refuses to leave, a breakdown
What Happened
The Tampa Bay Lightning are dominating the Philadelphia Flyers, leading 3-0 midway through the first period. As the Flyers' defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen is called for tripping, Flyers head coach John Tortorella erupts in protest on the bench. Tortorella vehemently disagrees with the call, yelling "What the fuck are you doing?" and "What? You called it on them, not on us. What? What? It's a dive." The officials review the play and correctly identify Ristolainen as the offender, awarding the Flyers a power play. However, Tortorella continues his tirade, getting into a heated exchange with the referees. Suddenly, the officials assess a 10-minute misconduct penalty on Flyers forward Joel Farabee, much to Tortorella's bewilderment. "Number 71, get out of here," the referee says, to which Tortorella responds by clapping and looking amused, as if the situation is "cute." Undeterred, Tortorella pulls the Flyers' goalie and continues berating the officials, prompting them to assess a bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct and a game misconduct on the Flyers' head coach. At this point, Tortorella refuses to leave the bench, defiantly stating, "I'm not fucking going. Tell him to go. New goalie starts getting loose, I'm not going. I'm staying right fucking here. No, I'm not leaving. No, I'm staying right fucking here." The referee repeatedly orders Tortorella to leave, but the coach stands his ground, saying, "You gotta go. I'm not going. Just play." The referee attempts to reason with Tortorella, suggesting he come over to talk before leaving, but the coach remains adamant, calling the officials "a bunch of motherfuckers" and declaring the situation "fucking bullshit." Finally, Tortorella decides to be the "bigger man" and leaves the bench, but not before expressing his frustration with the officiating.
