What Happened

The Detroit Red Wings find themselves trailing the Florida Panthers by one goal late in the third period. With their season on the line, the Red Wings' defense steps up in a big way, blocking an incredible seven shots in just 30 seconds. First, Red Wings defenseman Olli Maatta makes a nice play to knock the puck away from a Panthers player. The puck stays in the Detroit zone and the Panthers try to set up another scoring chance. Maatta bravely throws himself in front of the shot, taking the impact right on his left foot. He's clearly in pain, but fights through it to get back up and continue playing. The Panthers maintain possession, cycling the puck around the offensive zone. Veteran forward Filip Zadina makes a heads-up play, getting in front of the next shot and blocking it with his right leg. Zadina goes down to the ice, rolling around in obvious discomfort. "That dude takes one of the feet and he trips his teammate," the announcer observes, as Zadina's block causes a collision with another Red Wings player. Three blocked shots in quick succession have the Detroit bench fired up. The relentless Panthers keep the pressure on, firing another shot that Tyler Bertuzzi blocks with his stick. Unfortunately, the force of the impact shatters Bertuzzi's stick, leaving him unable to clear the puck from the zone. "Get it out of the zone, get it out of the zone," the announcer pleads, as the Panthers capitalize on the Red Wings' momentary vulnerability. Goaltender Ville Husso makes a save, but the rebound stays in play. Defenseman Jordan Oesterle steps up to block the follow-up attempt, the seventh Red Wings block in under 30 seconds. "Talk about a wild block party," the announcer exclaims. "Was it worth it? Did it matter? Did it lead to them tying the game?" Despite the Red Wings' valiant efforts, the Panthers eventually score in overtime to secure the victory. But the Detroit players' commitment to defense in that frantic sequence has the crowd buzzing. "That block party was a pretty good time," the announcer concludes, impressed by the Red Wings' determination to protect their net at all costs.
