Ridiculous Kansas punt ends BYU's undefeated hopes, a breakdown
What Happened
The BYU Cougars, a team with a 9-0 record and a perfect 6-0 conference record, take on the 3-6 Kansas Jayhawks in a game that will have major implications for BYU's undefeated season. BYU holds a 3-point lead late in the game, and the Jayhawks face a 4th-and-14 situation. Expecting a pass play, the BYU defense prepares to make a crucial stop. However, the Kansas quarterback instead calls for a surprise punt, catching the BYU players off guard. The punt bounces off the helmet of a BYU defender and then eludes another player's attempt to recover it, allowing Kansas to maintain possession. Head coach Lance Leipold of Kansas is visibly excited, knowing his team has pulled off a sneaky and game-changing play. The Kansas offense takes the field, with running back Devin Neal leading the charge. The Jayhawks capitalize on the momentum shift, scoring a touchdown to take the lead. BYU's fans, who had been confident in their team's undefeated record, are now left shocked and saddened by the turn of events. As BYU prepares to respond, the camera pans to the Cougars' Australian punter, Sam Vandagriff. Vandagriff, known for his unique style of hiking his pants up high, prepares to boot the ball downfield. The BYU players and fans, still reeling from the previous play, try to regain their composure, but the damage has been done. BYU's comeback efforts fall short, and the undefeated season comes to an end at the hands of the underdog Jayhawks. The Cougars' fans, some hiding in their scarves and hoodies, display a range of emotions, from disbelief to despair. The game-changing punt play, a moment of unexpected brilliance from the Kansas coaching staff, will be long remembered as the defining moment that ended BYU's hopes of an undefeated campaign.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentBYU's undefeated season comes to an end at the hands of 3-6 Kansas on what play?
BYU's up 3, their fans are happy, they're excited, they won last week, there's controversy,
they feel good about it, they've been dancing on graves, they're undefeated, 9-0, 6-0 in
their conference, and it's 4th and 14 for Kansas, and their quarterback is in the backfield,
they're going for it, so a big stop here, and you change the whole game, and what happens
is they say, we're not going for it, it's a punt, it was a sneaky punt, but I don't
know if the defense knows that's happening, he's covering a deep ball pass, and then it
hits him, his teammate tries to jump on it, he can't corral it, it bounces out, and Kansas
recovers it for the first down, he's like, what happened?
It hit the ground, it was a pass, no, it was a kick, a little pooch, and then it hits number
21.
And then 0 can't corral it, and then the other 0, 0-0, how about that, bam, just a
little drop kick, beautifully done, right off his helmet, damn, damn, you know, I don't
know if you drop this play and you're like, this is going to happen, but it's definitely
an option, which on a regular punt isn't usually an option, because you know, guys' heads are
all over the place, you can run them places, he's aiming over there in that corner, I wonder
in practice if he's just nailing it.
He nails at that, you got to think, bummer of a way to let them convert fourth down if
you're BYU, because it's just a giant momentum swing, huh, coach loves it, he's going, he's
not going that crazy, he's a little reserved, he's just saying, yeah, we did it, we did
it, now it's first and goal, they got the ball, they got the running back, he's been
the star of the game, Neil, I believe is his name, I believe his name is Neil, look at
all the blue on the Kansas jerseys from running.
Rub it, oh, that's probably end zone, I thought it was rubbing up against BYU jerseys, that
would be crazy, he's still trying to figure out, like, what happened, dude, what, they're
excited, that must be the one section of Kansas fans there, they don't even really look that
red, there's like five guys, he's still trying to figure out, what happened, the QB punted
it, they hit me, extra points, good, BYU, they're still in this game, there's a lot
of time left, they get stopped, and there's, is their punter that comes out, and I just
had to include this, it's not really part of the story, but.
My goodness, if you don't see this, and immediately know that that man is Australian, you need
to correct yourself on world looks, that is an AFL player that said, I'll go, I'll go
to the US and boot some balls around, look at those pants, he's hiked them all the way
up, I mean, this guy's Australian as Australian gets, and he's representing the country well,
his name is San, Sam, Vandaha.
Ah, probably kicks the shit out of the ball, wonder if he's older too, he's like 24, and
he's like, yeah, let's go to the States, kick some balls, oh, to BYU, wonder if he knew
about the whole religion thing about attending BYU, maybe that was a, maybe that, maybe that
happened, you know, wait, this guy signed something saying he won't have sex, came from
Australia, signed that, maybe there's a big Mormon, I'm interested to see how that played
out, like, if he, he got to campus, he's like, what's this, I can't, what?
It doesn't make sense, or he's super Mormon, and he was into that, anyway, he boots it
downfield, and afterwards, he pulls his pants down, they look normal here, see, pretty normal,
but, but for the punt, hiked them up, and he's hiking them back up, you know, I got
to let these guys know, I got to let them know there's more where that came from, so
that's Sam Vandaha, the Australian punter on BYU, oh, cool face paint, you know, you
think they did it to each other?
Blue scratch marks, cougar marks, I don't know, guys, I don't know about that, I don't
know about, I don't know about that, I don't know about that, I think you got to go just
like all blue, you know, those are pretty delicately put on, a little pitch, go pitch
it to Johnny, but coach, I'm Johnny, third and six, they don't get it, now things are
getting sad for BYU, they're like, this is how it ends, that play, to Kansas, what?
What?
Fourth and six, false start by everyone, kind of maybe like a slow start, maybe they
say slow start by the center, or it's false start by everyone else, center just stuck,
just like, here you go, here's the ball, what's going on, we good, what happened?
So now it's fourth and 11, game on the line, fourth and six, they had a play drawn up,
looks like they run the same play, they get the six yards they would have needed, they
don't get the 11.
They now need, because of the center's delay, and Roberts comes up short, and BYU fans look
like this, despondent and sad, you still got a great record, but that's not how you want
to lose the undefeated streak, no, the chef is there, this guy wants to hide in his hoodie,
but also wants to see what's going on, he was torn, this guy, cold, white hood, white
hat, looks good, oh, oh, oh, girl on the left does not realize what's happening, girl in
the middle, pretty aware.
And more sad fans, really sad, hiding in the scarf, just very sad fans, oh, it's tough,
tough, tough, tough.
