What Happened

In a back-and-forth college football matchup, the Norfolk State Spartans are trailing the Virginia State Spartans by 3 points late in the game. With the score 27-24 Virginia State, the Spartans have the ball on their own 15-yard line and are desperately trying to tie the game. Norfolk State attempts a reverse play, with wide receiver Jamal Hines taking the handoff and running down the sideline. Hines eludes several defenders and reaches the Virginia State 15-yard line, putting the Spartans in field goal range to potentially tie the game. However, instead of attempting the field goal, Norfolk State decides to go for the win. On 4th and 1, quarterback Juwan Carter keeps the ball and tries to run for the first down, but the Virginia State defense stuffs the play. With the game seemingly over, the Norfolk State players begin celebrating prematurely, waving goodbye to the crowd as if they have secured the victory. Unfortunately for the Spartans, Virginia State takes over on downs with just a few seconds remaining. The Virginian State players, sensing an opportunity, quickly run a play to run out the clock and secure the 27-24 win. "We had it the whole time," says Virginia State head coach Reggie Barlow, grinning from ear to ear after the victory. Norfolk State's Long Snapper, dejected, understands now why the coaching staff did not trust him to attempt the game-tying field goal earlier. "I get it now," he says solemnly, "I get why you didn't want me in the game." Despite the heartbreaking loss, the Norfolk State Spartans had shown tremendous fight throughout the contest, nearly pulling off an improbable comeback victory. The Virginia State Spartans, on the other hand, managed to keep their composure and capitalize on their opponent's premature celebration to emerge victorious in this sloppy but thrilling finish to the game.
