What Happened

The New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays are locked in a back-and-forth battle in the Bronx. The Blue Jays jump out to an early 5-0 lead, with outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. launching a three-run home run off Yankees starter James Paxton in the first inning and catcher Danny Jansen following with a two-run shot in the second. The Yankees slowly chip away at the deficit, with outfielder Edwin Encarnacion hitting a solo home run in the third to extend the team's MLB-record streak of games with a long ball to 29. In the fourth inning, reigning AL MVP outfielder Aaron Judge delivers a two-run single to pull the Yankees within one and second baseman DJ LeMahieu follows with a two-run homer to tie the game at 5-5. Gurriel Jr. gives the Blue Jays the lead again with his second home run of the game in the sixth, but the Yankees rally in the bottom of the ninth. With the score tied 7-7, second baseman Gleyber Torres drops a bloop single into right field, scoring outfielder Edwin Encarnacion for the game-winning run. "It was a grind all game," Torres says. "But we never gave up and that's what I love about this team." The come-from-behind 8-7 victory completes a three-game sweep for the first-place Yankees over the struggling Blue Jays. "We fought hard, but they just kept coming at us," Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo says. "That's why the Yankees are one of the best teams in baseball." With the win, the Yankees improve to 49-27 on the season and extend their lead in the AL East. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, fall to 29-49 as their postseason hopes continue to fade. This is a critical series win for the Yankees as they gear up for an interleague matchup against the defending champion Boston Red Sox next weekend in London.
