Yankees play the Yankees in their first intrasquad game, a breakdown
What Happened
In the first intrasquad game of the New York Yankees' return to play, the players are feeling energetic and playful. First baseman Luke Voit comments that he has actually lost 13 pounds during the quarantine, joking that others may have "put on 50 pounds." Outfielder Aaron Judge scans the crowd and tells them, "This is going to be fun." Catcher Gary Sanchez and outfielder J.A. Happ compare their long hair as they get ready for the game. Outfielder Mike Tauchman catches a throw from the bullpen catcher, noting that it "kind of sucks." Infielder Gio Urshela fields a ground ball hit by Miguel Andujar, who asks Urshela to show him how to field properly. When Judge grounds out, he jokingly tells the pitcher, "Come on, dude. You're still throwing like that?" Highly-touted pitching prospect Clarke Schmidt then takes the mound, impressing with his nasty fastballs and sharp movement. "He's coming," the narrator says of Schmidt. Veteran reliever Zach Britton showcases his impressive fielding ability, making a smooth play to first base. First baseman Voit then interacts with a lucky fan in the stands, asking "Who wants it?" and tossing them a ball. Infielder Tyler Wade is asked about his favorite shape, responding simply "square." Pitcher Chad Green then enters the game, working on a new knuckle-curve pitch that he spikes in the dirt. The narrator excitedly notes, "Chad Green's got a new pitch he's working on." As the game continues, veteran starter CC Sabathia is seen in conversation with general manager Brian Cashman, with Sabathia appearing "a little active" on the sidelines. The only well-hit ball of the day comes off the bat of minor leaguer Trey Amburgey, who hits a home run off of pitcher Nick Canely. With the players feeling loose and the young arms like Schmidt impressing, the first intrasquad game of the Yankees' summer camp is full of energy, experimentation and a glimpse of the talent that will take the field when the season begins.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentThe Yanks were back in action. They were feeling great, running, looking good. Everyone slim.
I've actually lost 13 pounds, so quarantine was good to me. I didn't put on
50 pounds like some people probably did. Ooh, shots fired from Voight as Judge
scans the crowd and says this is going to be fun. Gary and Happ compare
hair lengths. Dono looking cute with the mask on, and now Judge telling the crowd
in the top left there, get on up. Maybe he's talking the press box. Bullpen
catcher rings up Tauchman. Gloves on, balls in the ass. Tauchman like, okay, that kind
of sucks. Then Anduar hits one to Gio Urshela at third, says, hey, Gio, can
you show me how to field a ground ball? Okay, cool. That looked nice and
easy and smooth. Let me try that. So Judge grounds out to Anduar, and he
says, I'm going to give this a go, and it's like, oh my God, dude.
You're still throwing like that? Come on. Come on. Clark Schmidt prospect, Clark
Schmidt put on a display. Just nasty pitches. Fastballs there.
Higgy doing a great job catching them. Just hitting the bottom. Look at that movement.
Cool effect coming up that I learned how to do. Oh, look at the arc
on that. Just great. Obviously, pitchers are way ahead of hitters, and hitters aren't really
trying to put the ball in play. They're just trying to see it and track
it and have fun tracking that. Look at that. Just nasty. Up
and down. Clark Schmidt. Remember the name. He's coming. Zach Britton, he put on a
fielding display. Ground ball. His ground ball rate. Top in the league, so he better
be good at fielding. Just nice, easy, cool, calm cavalier. Over to Voight. Voight says,
who wants it? Well, lucky fan wants it. Yeah? Okay, here you go. A fan
asks Tyler Wade his favorite shape. He says, square. Dude, that's obvious. Then Chad Green
comes in. Gone goosin'. Absolutely love it. Judge, big swing at the slider there. Or
curve. Chad Green said he's working on a knuckle curve. I think this next one
is the knuckle curve. He spikes it a little bit. Exciting. Chad Green's got a
new pitch he's working on. CeCe Sabathia and Cashman having a nice conversation. CeCe a
little active. Like, come on, come on. And then the young Prince, Tyro Estrada,
shoots one into left. Really the only well -hit ball of the day.
Homer off Canely. That's your Yankees update.
