Corbin Burnes gets ejected from the dugout, a breakdown
What Happened
Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Corbin Burnes gets into a heated argument with the home plate umpire in the bottom of the sixth inning. The score is tied and Burnes is clearly frustrated with the umpire's strike zone calls. When Burnes doesn't get a borderline pitch called a strike, he expresses his displeasure to the umpire. The umpire warns Burnes, but Burnes continues to argue and is ultimately ejected from the dugout. Burnes is clearly upset about the umpire's inconsistent zone, wanting the low strikes that he believes he's earned. After a couple more borderline calls don't go his way, Burnes becomes increasingly agitated. He tells the umpire, "Don't even rely on the UMP, do it all yourself," as he makes a play to catch a foul ball himself. Burnes then spikes the ball in frustration, drawing cheers from the aggressive home crowd. The argument continues, with Burnes telling the umpire, "I want the bottom of the Zone, don't care about the outside." The umpire warns Burnes to stop, but Burnes persists, saying, "Oh shut up all day Bob." Burnes' body language and tone make it clear he believes the umpire is being unfair and inconsistent. As the top of the seventh inning begins, the umpire tells Burnes, "What did you say? Did you say 'probably not'?" Burnes responds, "I might have said it, I might have." The umpire then ejects Burnes from the game, to which Burnes simply laughs. It's unclear if Burnes was going to remain in the game after his high pitch count, but the ejection seems to stem from his earlier comments to the umpire. Burnes is one of the best pitchers in baseball and his competitiveness and desire to get every call is on full display in this confrontation. The umpire, Bob Davidson, is known for being willing to eject players and he doesn't back down from Burnes' insistence on a more favorable strike zone. This heated exchange between a star pitcher and a veteran umpire provides an entertaining glimpse into the intensity and frustration that can boil over during a close, tightly contested baseball game.
