Both teams miss home plate in the same game, a breakdown
What Happened
In a bizarre game between the birds (St. Louis Cardinals) and the fish (Miami Marlins), two players in the game fail to touch home plate, leading to some amusing on-field confusion and discussions. In the top of the 2nd inning, with the Cardinals leading, Marlins outfielder Jesús Sánchez hits a ground ball to center field. Marlins baserunner Avisaíl García rounds third base and heads home, but Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina tags him out before García can reach the plate. Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas emphatically declares that García is out, while Molina admires his own defensive play. Garcia insists he touched the plate, but the umpire rules him out. Later, in the bottom of the 9th inning, Cardinals outfielder Tyler O'Neill rips a double to left-center field. O'Neill tries to score from first base, but he too misses home plate entirely as he approaches the plate. O'Neill claims he touched it, but the replay shows his hand never made contact. The umpire rules O'Neill out as well, leaving both teams frustrated by the unusual base-running blunders. Throughout the discussion, the announcers break down the plays, noting the nuances of the catcher's positioning and the runners' movements. They speculate that the new rules around catcher interference may have played a role, as Molina was able to block the plate before securing the ball. The coaches also engage in animated conversations with the umpires, trying to determine exactly what can be challenged on the plays. Despite the bizarre ending, the game remains close, with the Cardinals clinging to a narrow lead. As the teams head to Denver for the upcoming All-Star festivities, the crew plans to attend the Home Run Derby, play blitzball, and host a watch party for fans in the area.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentbirds versus fish in saint louis we had
two players in this game miss home plate
so we're top
second right now wayno's on the bump
duval gets on first base with that
single
there's one out then we're gonna get
another out then the next batter comes
up
two outs sierra puts that one on the
ground
center fielder can't get it even though
it was right there
so now duval's rounding 30 makes sure to
step on third base
changes his steps a little bit to hit it
coming home does he get his handed wayno
says no no no yachty
tag him tag him yaddy says all right
i'll tag him um says he's
out bueno says good job yaddy really
good job staying with the play he says
no
that was all you i admire you and they
admire
each other and duvall says hey but uh he
was you know he didn't have the ball he
was blocking the plate
so here's the play again and i i want to
know like
this hand may have got in there may have
got in there
that's what i thought they were
reviewing the hand because it may have
gotten there you don't have a view but
you know the umpu made that call didn't
have that
view on the other side of the shoe
either yadi didn't have the ball
and we have a really good angle of him
getting back here he tries to sneak his
foot in but yatty gets him before he
even reaches the plate
so he's definitely what he's out if he
didn't touch initially he's out there
now mattingly wants to challenge but he
doesn't know what to challenge did he
touch the plate or are we challenging
that yachty was blocking the plate
so his coach calls him over you can pick
up some words here
he says he didn't have possession of the
ball he's blocking the plate his foot's
on the plate
sporadic words and mattingly says yeah
okay we're gonna challenge
that he was blocking the plate and now
you can see this ump
and you can some words here it looks to
me like body positioning
whole plate body positioning on the
whole plate
body positioning on the whole plate so i
think what they're saying is that
you know the new rule is that you can't
you have to give the runner a lane to
home plate
before you have possession of the ball
once a catcher has possession of the
ball he can block the entire plate he
can do what he want
and i think what they're gonna say here
is that if duval slides a little
different he could definitely
get his hand back here or he could come
up around the shoe and hit here
that his body had a lane
to home plate his hand just had to do
some sneaky maneuvering
so i think that's what they're ruling
it's definitely they were reviewing if
yaddy was blocking the plate before he
had possession of the ball
i wish we had a better angle of the hand
coming down on initially because maybe
it hit but they say nope
didn't block it he's out now the next
inning
the cardinals are up and they're down
one run
and we have o'neill at the plate he's
been hot lately
and the pitch is coming and he's gonna
shoot that one
into left center split the gap real nice
piece of hitting so now we got another
runner
trying to go first to home and the
relay's there
and he doesn't slide at all no collision
but he doesn't step on home
plate he just misses he says no i
touched it i touched it i touched it he
didn't we'll show you that
soon but what happened on this play was
that the runner
i mean he's just watching the ball when
you have yachty
telling you hey you're good just stand
up just stand up
right there maybe he should have just
slid maybe addy should have said
just slide because the ball is coming
but he does this little
duck because he thinks he's going to
collide with the catcher
and that makes him not pay attention to
his feet misses home plate tries to get
back does a little sneaky swim move but
the catcher says no
just tag you out and his hand actually
never even touches
home plate he never even reached it so
for him to come up and say i touched it
i touched it i touch it
it's kind of funny i'll just review that
one and they say he's out too no one's
touching home plate in this game
no one not a damn person kind of weird
