Umpire was not watching what the manager was arguing, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cleveland Guardians trail their opponents by two runs. Stephen Vogt, the Guardians' manager, emerges from the dugout, seemingly engaged in an argument with home plate umpire Wolfie. The previous batter was hit by a pitch, and now the Guardians have a runner on third base with one out. As the new pitcher takes the mound, Vogt continues his heated discussion with Wolfie. The manager appears frustrated, gesticulating and pointing emphatically. Wolfie listens intently, but it's clear he's not convinced by Vogt's case. The crowd at the stadium grows increasingly restless, sensing the tension on the field. Suddenly, Vogt's body language shifts, and he begins angrily pointing at the pitcher. It becomes apparent that Vogt is arguing about the pitcher's delivery, specifically the movement of his right knee. The umpire stands his ground, and Vogt's frustration boils over. "Wolfie, you messed up," he says, his voice raised. "He moved his leg, and you didn't see it." The argument intensifies, with Vogt continuing to plead his case. Wolfie remains steadfast, and without warning, he raises his hand and ejects Vogt from the game. "You're gone, get out of here," Wolfie declares, leaving the Guardians' manager in disbelief. Vogt, now the first-ever manager to be ejected in his big-league career, refuses to leave quietly. He makes a point of fastening his pen tightly to his jersey, ensuring he doesn't lose it as he exits the field. The pitcher, also visibly upset, exchanges a tense stare with Vogt before the manager departs. Despite the heated exchange, the game continues, and the Guardians eventually manage to get the final out of the inning. While the team's performance on the field has been a struggle, this incident serves as a testament to Vogt's passion and commitment to his team. As he heads to the clubhouse, the crowd applauds, acknowledging the manager's willingness to stand up for his players.
