Umpire ejects Derek Shelton for arguing a legal ABS challenge, a breakdown
What Happened
We had our first ejection of the season due to the new robo umps.
Why This Matters
Derek Shelton got tossed for challenging a call that was actually legal under the new robo ump rules, which is peak baseball chaos. This is what happens when managers and umps are still figuring out the system, and honestly it's hilarious to watch someone get ejected for doing something completely within the rules.
This breakdown hit 150K views and cracked the top 1,100 all-time, proving people can't get enough of robo ump drama.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentWe had our first ejection of the season
due to the new robo umps. This one's
brought to you by MLB nine innings. The
Orioles are up by two. It's the ninth
inning. The Twins have a runner on first
and Bell is the tying run at the plate.
There's two outs. They've got their
closer in. It's ball one. It's ball two.
It's ball three. Did he go? NO.
Three and0. That is ball four. No. Come
on. We're tapping our helmet. He's
running down the first and he's like,
"Yeah, I'll just head back home. I know
what this one's gonna say." I agree. It
was a good tap. He's proud of them.
Three-0 pitch. Usually umpires expand. I
wonder if that umpire was like in his
head. He's like, "I don't expand because
then they're going to tap on me." He
didn't. Got tapped on anyway. Next
pitch, fouled back. Full count. Big
pitch. Goes with a back door breaking
ball. And then he's tapping his head.
The pitcher on the mound. He's allowed
to do it. The batter is allowed to do
it. The catcher's allowed to do it. So
they give it to him. We're going to go.
This is either two on or strike three.
It's strike three. What a turn of
events. Instead of two runners on, it's
the third strike. It's an out. They're
celebrating in the crowd, but someone
doesn't like it. It's the manager of the
Twins, Shelton. He's not happy about it
at all. He says, "Chris,
that's way too late." Yep. He's
not happy. Look, Cal's in the crowd and
he says, uh, he's arguing it took too
long. All over it, AS YOU'D EXPECT. GOD
DAMN IT. THAT'S That's
too late. THAT'S TOO
LATE.
IT'S TOO LATE. NO,
IT'S NOT. IT'S LATE. COME ON. IT'S
That's too late. And he gets
ejected right there. That's why his face
changed. That's why he went from this
TO THAT. OH, BECAUSE HE JUST got
ejected. There's no video of it. So, we
don't know if the umpire threw him out
emphatically or just sadly, but he got
ejected and his IMMEDIATE REACTION IS,
"OH, YOU. Are you me?"
Oh, that's way too late. Godamn
it, Chris. That's the umpire's name. I
always love when they just casually drop
that. Speaking of umpire Chris says,
"No, it's not. That's way too late."
Tell me. Tell me why. Tell me why. Tell
me why. Because it's too late. Supposed
to be 3 seconds. 3 seconds.
It's too late. Wait.
Too late. THAT'S A
CHALLENGE. THAT'S A
CHALLENGE. NO. YOU. THAT'S
Shel, he tapped right away.
HE KNOWS HE TAPPED LIKE THREE
TIMES. You know he didn't tap. It was
way TOO LATE.
>> I SAW HIM. It was way too late. YOU'RE
JUST DEFENDING YOUR FRIENDS. IT'S WAY
too late.
>> No, it's You guys missed it. He missed
it. AND YOU MISSED ME. I'M WATCHING. I'm
telling you that's
And he walks off the field and these
little this little boy. Look at this
little boy behind him.
Just getting a show. That's the bad man.
He swore and he is mad. He's going to
walk down in the dugout. He thinks it
was too late. If you didn't know, he
thinks it was too late. So, before we
check to see if he tapped too late, I I
had to figure out what the rule is. So,
I reached out. I read a lot of articles.
I reached out to Major League Baseball.
It is instantly you have to tap. And
there is a guideline that it's around
two seconds. So, I don't know where
Shelty got 3 seconds from, but you could
see him say right here because it's too
late. Supposed to be 3 seconds.
But I couldn't find anything on 3
seconds. Actually, I found two seconds.
And that it has to just be instantly
right away. Unless there's a play at a
base. If the catcher throws the ball to
second because the runner's stealing,
he's allowed to tap after he throws it
down. You know, that allows for a little
bit of delay. So, let's see. Here's the
pitch. And I'm guessing the timer starts
right after the umpire makes his call,
right? It's not like when he throws it.
It's not when the catcher catches it. I
would guess it's when he uh the umpire
makes the call. So, to my best
knowledge, we're going to start the
timer right here. And that's the first
tap. So, it's less than a second. Now,
what probably happened was, and then
we'll play it forward. And that's the
second tap. That's over two seconds, but
still less than three, which Sheld was
arguing. But, he did tap instantly. And
then there's a third one right there at
four seconds. I'm going to guess that
Shelton was watching the catcher and not
the pitcher and didn't see that tap
which happened at just the 1 second
mark. A little under the 1 second mark.
I think he was probably watching the
catcher to see if the catcher would tap.
He missed that one and he missed that
one and then he saw this one at the end
which was too late. But he probably
missed the first because he was watching
the catcher. That's my assumption. So
that's why he's upset. The game
continues. There's two outs. There's a
runner on first. That's a strike.
Probably maybe a ball. That's a ball.
And that is put in play and botched. Oh
no.
Manager gets ejected and the boys are
fired up. We've got the tying run on
first. He can't believe it. The ball
betrayed him. Giving it a little rub
down to get back on the good side.
Alman's up looking to get not out.
Boomch anyway. Uh then it's a strike and
then a ball and then we've got a ball in
play and it's going to be caught for the
last out. So he didn't the ejection did
not spark a good finish. The Orioles
just won. And that is our first ejection
about the communication issues o over
