Umpire ejects Clint Frazier with a quick hook, a breakdown
What Happened
In the top of the fifth inning of a scoreless game between the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays, right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha of the Rays faces off against Clint Frazier of the Yankees. The game is tied 0-0 and the stakes are high as the two American League East rivals battle it out. Wacha delivers a sweeping breaking ball to Frazier, who lays off the pitch as the home plate umpire calls it a ball. Wacha comes back with another sharp breaking pitch on the outside corner and the umpire rules it a strike. Frazier takes a frustrated swing at the next offering, which narrowly misses the strike zone. As Wacha continues to work the outside part of the plate, Frazier becomes visibly frustrated. On a 3-2 pitch, Wacha throws inside and the umpire calls it a strike, ringing up Frazier. Frazier turns to the umpire and says something and the umpire immediately ejects him from the game. Yankees manager Aaron Boone rushes out to argue, but he appears more upset with Frazier than the umpire. "Boone just looks defeated by the whole thing," the commentator notes, as Frazier walks off the field. The Yankees are already short-handed, with infielder Gio Urshela out due to COVID-19 protocols. "Clint definitely didn't deserve to get tossed," the commentator says, noting that the pitch called strike three was a borderline call, with Pitch Tracking systems showing it as a strike. "The ump's in the wrong there," he adds, criticizing the umpire's quick trigger in ejecting Frazier. As Frazier returns to the dugout, he explains the situation to a teammate, saying, "I said this and he said 'gone,' and that was it." The commentator notes that Frazier's reaction did not seem to warrant such a swift ejection, leaving the Yankees short-handed in a tight division rivalry game.

yarby coming at him with that funk
working that outside edge the whole time
gets the strike call there
brings the sweeper in him says no he did
not swing
back to that outside edge i like that
pitch look at this
going going falls off going going right
at that corner and then tails away
bam nice pitch clint swings at that gets
a little frustrated with himself
yarby comes right back with it misses a
little low clinton takes it
as a ball oh and he comes with the
sweeper
doesn't get it but imagine if he got
this a little higher
yarby you're funky dude that would have
been a fun pitch he was bouncing like he
wanted it
the 3-2 pitch he finally comes inside
ump calls strike now i don't know what
clint said
watch this it looks like he just said yo
and then he said
that word to me looks like down i'm
gonna go back i'm gonna go back i'm
gonna go back i'm gonna go back
right here down
is kind of what that looks like to me i
think anything like you gotta bring that
down
it's too high i don't know but then that
second sentence it's too hard because
clint's looking down i can't figure it
out
but this that face by clint's pretty
funny the second sentence the umpires
and he throws it up no idea what he said
but it looks so benign and not bad at
all on clint's like what
that was a really quick hook like what
now the yankees are already a man down
labor tours is out due to some testing
stuff with covert because it's going
through the clubhouse and the coaches
so boone's more mad at clint than he is
at the ump
because he probably was like hey no one
can get thrown out we're already man
down and guardi's getting his day off
and clinton's saying what did i say
and boone just i mean usually boone has
you know his players backs
but instead he's just keeping clint away
and you can see boone just looks
defeated by the whole thing
and so does clint kind of but clint
definitely didn't deserve to get tossed
and boone doesn't even argue
at all man like at all
here's the pitch the other thing is this
ump was making some bad calls he's a
pitcher's um
like a known pitcher's hump but this
pitch isn't
horrible uh baseball savant has it as a
strike
uh all the tracking places have it as a
strike it's
i could see how it feels inside to clint
because they were working the outside
the whole way through
but yeah it's kind of a defensible pitch
i mean everyone tracked it as a strike
he called it as a strike
now clint's telling someone on the bench
the story here and he says
you know i said this and he said gone
and that was it
and then that's it clint's gone and the
ump's just standing here thinking
maybe that was too fast maybe that's too
fast oh
eye movement here maybe that's too fat
anyway this one's brought to you by

pick up clinton fantasy if you want i
don't know walk every now and then
in two weeks pick him up maybe he's
starting hitting again but
he thought he was getting another walk
there which is kind of what he's
bringing to the table right now
so i don't know in the end i think the
pitch was called correctly
so the ump's right there clint didn't
think it was called correctly and said a
little something but didn't say anything
that bad
so i don't think clint's totally in the
wrong there at all but then the ump
throws clint
out real quick so now i think the ump's
in the wrong there and then boone
seemed way more mad at clint than the
umpire which is the opposite of what it
usually is
and that's the situation you're filled
in
