In the bottom of the first inning, the New York Yankees hold a 1-0 lead over their opponent, with two outs and two runners on base. Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin decides to send the runner home on a single to left field by Yankees outfielder Joey Gallo. However, Gallo's throw reaches catcher Gary Sanchez well before the runner, setting up what should be a routine play at the plate. Sanchez receives the throw and has the runner, who is identified as Venezuelian second baseman Willians Astudillo of the Minnesota Twins, dead to rights. The home plate umpire, Telo Wade, watches closely to ensure Astudillo touches the plate. But in a surprising turn of events, Sanchez completely botches the tag attempt, failing to apply the tag even as Astudillo slides headfirst into home. Astudillo, realizing Sanchez has missed the tag, quickly maneuvers his foot under Sanchez's glove and touches the plate, scoring the run. The umpire initially rules Astudillo out, but the Twins dugout immediately challenges the call. Replays show that Sanchez never actually tagged Astudillo, and the call is overturned - Astudillo is ruled safe. "Umpire says yep, touched him in the head, touched him in the head," narrates. "VR [Astudillo] says, 'No, my feet went underneath,' and he's like, 'Nope, gotcha in the head.'" The embarrassed Sanchez can only laugh ruefully as his teammates and the opposing Twins players express their disbelief at the comically poor tag attempt. "Literally all Gary has to do is keep both his feet like that and put the glove in front of his body, and it's an out because the guy cannot run you over," explains. "Instead, he lays him, gives him the lane, VR kind of deeks him, gets crafty. Credit to VR, I mean, if he didn't give up, he tried whatever way he could to get in there and he's safe." With the call overturned, the Twins score a run to tie the game, much to the chagrin of the Yankees and their fans. Yankees pitcher Jordan Montgomery must then return to the mound to face the continued threat, but he is able to strike out the next batter to end the inning.
