BYU Lineman Throws Tennessee QBs shoe during the game, a breakdown
What Happened
In a tense matchup between the BYU Cougars and the Tennessee Volunteers, tensions boil over on the field. Early in the game, Tennessee running back Jaylen Wright picks up a 9-yard gain, trying to help the struggling Volunteers offense bounce back from their tough loss to Georgia State the previous week. On the next play, Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker attempts a pass, but BYU defensive lineman Atunaisa Mahe, who is listed at 6'3" and 310 lbs, barrels through the line and delivers a big hit on Hooker. Mahe, wearing jersey number 99, is clearly frustrated with Tennessee's offensive efforts. On the very next play, with Tennessee facing 3rd and 1, Hooker fakes a handoff and rolls out, but Mahe is there again to meet him in the backfield. As Hooker tries to evade the pursuing Mahe, his shoe comes flying off. Mahe scoops up the shoe and heaves it downfield, drawing the attention of the officials. Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel retrieves the shoe and hands it back to Hooker, who straps it back on, clearly annoyed by the antics. The game goes to double overtime, where the Cougars demonstrate their grit and determination. On a crucial 4th down play, the BYU offensive line drives the Tennessee defense deep into the end zone, allowing running back Christopher Brooks to score the game-winning touchdown. The BYU sideline erupts in celebration, with head coach Kalani Sitake joining in enthusiastically. Sitake, clearly fired up, rips off his headset and flings it to the ground, mirroring the shoe-throwing display earlier in the game. Throughout the hard-fought battle, the BYU Cougars, led by their emotional and physical defensive line, refuse to back down, ultimately prevailing over the struggling Tennessee Volunteers in a thrilling double overtime contest.
