Peter Moylan hits the pitcher who walked him, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the 9th inning, the game is tied between the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs. Braves pitcher Peter Moylan, a 26-year-old in his second year in the big leagues, comes into the game in relief after the starter, Hudson, gets injured. Moylan quickly gets his first walk of the game, then strikes out the next batter he faces. After a fly ball out, Moylan induces a strange double play, where the runner rounds third base thinking the ball will be dropped, only to be tagged out. Now it's Moylan's turn at the plate, facing Cubs pitcher Sean Gallagher, who is making his MLB debut. Moylan, hitless in two previous at-bats with two strikeouts, steps in looking focused. The 1-1 pitch from Gallagher misses the zone, and Moylan takes the walk. The next pitch from Gallagher absolutely startles the young pitcher, as Moylan unleashes a powerful, weight-shifting swing that has Gallagher visibly shaken. Gallagher then spikes his next pitch, clearly intimidated by Moylan's presence in the batter's box. Moylan calmly bat-flips his way to first base, much to the bewilderment of Braves manager Bobby Cox. With warnings already issued in the game, Moylan takes the mound again and, in a controversial move, hits Gallagher with a pitch. The umpire quickly ejects Moylan, who appears to be surprised by the decision. Braves outfielder Alfonso Soriano steps in and Moylan strikes him out to end his 3-inning outing. Despite the ejection, Moylan has made his mark on the game, recording his first career walk and hitting the opposing pitcher who had just walked him. The young Braves reliever has shown his feisty competitiveness, leaving an impression on players, coaches, and fans alike. Moylan's journey continues, as he now works for and co-hosts the popular "Farm to Fame" podcast.
