Everyone said the umps got this wrong but maybe they didn't, a breakdown
What Happened
The Philadelphia Phillies are hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers in a highly anticipated matchup. The Phillies hold a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Dodgers shortstop Trea Turner steps up to the plate with two runners on base, threatening to cut into the Phillies' lead. Trea Turner swings at the first pitch, fouling it off to go down 0-1 in the count. The next pitch is inside, allowing the Dodgers' runners to advance. Turner then fouls off another pitch to make it 0-2. The Dodgers' dugout is tense as Turner steps back in, needing to produce in this crucial at-bat. Turner swings and hits a groundball up the middle. Phillies shortstop Didi Gregorius makes a nice play, scooping up the ball and firing it to first base. Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman makes the catch, but replays show that his foot may have come off the bag as he secured the ball. The umpires convene to review the play and after a lengthy deliberation, they rule that Freeman was indeed out, much to the dismay of the Dodgers' dugout and broadcast announcers. "How did they get that wrong?" one of the announcers exclaims in disbelief. However, upon closer inspection, the replay shows that Freeman's foot may have briefly come off the bag as the ball arrived in his glove, even though it appeared he had maintained control. "The ball is in the glove and then we slide over to his foot and I think they're going to say that looks like it's still on the base to me," the narrator explains. The umpires in New York ultimately uphold the original out call, much to the surprise of the Dodgers' fans and broadcast team. "I think they got it right," the narrator concludes. "In the spirit of the rule, the fact that replay is going frame by frame, I think the ump's got it right." The Dodgers are unable to capitalize further in the inning, as the next batter grounds out to end the threat. The Phillies maintain their 2-0 lead, with the game remaining a tightly contested battle between these two NL powerhouses.

usually just scrap these because i feel
like i i missed the moment i missed the

twitter there will always be people
replying like this is so long ago blah

but
i like making videos and i edited it so
i'm just gonna roll with it we'll see
how it goes it's about the umpires and
it's a good one about the umps i think a
lot of people suggested this first pitch
that's a nice pitch in there for a
strike next pitch swinging owen 2 to
trey turner that's inside and so inside
the runners advance you don't want to do
that because now you can score a run on
and out o2 pitch waist job not great up
the middle didi makes the play backyard
brad with the snag ump calls them out
but there's a reason this got suggested
as often as it did one two big fan bases
that request breakdowns a lot two when
they went to replay it really looks like
brad comes off the base and does not
catch that ball and it's not an out
looks like his foot gets pulled off once
the ball's in the glove and it kind of
does but it kind of doesn't this guy's
sweating it out wondering what's gonna
happen it's a big moment in the game

looking at the replay everyone's looking
up the umps come back and they say
yep we got it right he's out and
everyone's shocked in lifetime the
announcers for both teams don't
understand what happens
i it's hard for my eyes to go from when

i don't know what they didn't see we'll
take it
i don't know he was off right there
let's take a look at what i think the
umpire saw in new york so there's the
ball in the glove right and now the ball
doesn't have to hit the back pocket it
just needs to be in the webbing of the
glove which i always thought was really
weird that they made the replay rule
that because when you um when you're
taught how to call out at first base you
stare at the base and you listen for the
ball to hit the glove and that's how you
make the call listening to the ball hit
the glove watching the foot at the base
and if you're listening for that that
means that we're counting it when the
ball hits the glove not when it just
enters it so i always was confused why
they made it but at this freeze frame
the ball is in the glove there and then
we slide over to his foot and i think
they're gonna say that looks like it's
still on the base to me that looks like
there is one frame where the ball's
inside his glove it hasn't at the back
of the glove yet and the foot's on the
back i'm guessing because then if you
play it a little bit you can see the
foot then does come off the back
but at this
point it's not unclear the foot may be
on the bag there it looks like it is and
at that point the ball is in his glove

think they
got it right i mean in the spirit of the
rule the fact that replay is going frame
by frame i think the ump's got it right
but this guy requested a ton because
both announcers were like how'd they get
that wrong
so maybe they didn't get it wrong
the rules odd but i think
that rule they got it right anyway
dodgers got one run but they ground out
