Overturned game-winning goal AFTER trophy ceremony, a breakdown
What Happened
In a thrilling overtime matchup for the Mason Cup, the Minnesota State Mavericks and Bemidji State Beavers battle it out on the ice. The game is tied 1-1 as the teams enter sudden death overtime, with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Early in the extra period, Minnesota State's Josh Groll, wearing jersey number 12, scores what appears to be the game-winning goal. The Mavericks erupt in celebration, throwing their sticks and gloves into the air. The crowd goes wild as the team skates a victory lap, with the players passing the trophy around and taking celebratory photos. However, the on-ice officials quickly intervene, stating that the goal is under review. After a lengthy delay, the call is overturned - the puck had gone underneath the net and the goal does not count. Visibly deflated, the Mavericks are forced to retake the ice and resume play. In the ensuing minutes, Bemidji State's number 14 player is drawn deep into the Minnesota State zone, allowing a perfect outlet pass to a streaking Mavericks defenseman. He drops the puck to an open teammate, number 13, who calmly deposits the puck into the back of the net to give Minnesota State the true game-winning goal. "I'm really proud of the guys because they stuck with it and found a way to get it done," says Minnesota State head coach, praising his team's resilience after the overturned initial goal. The Mavericks celebrate their Mason Cup victory, cutting down the net and posing for team photos. However, the confusion remains over the initial "goal scorer of the game" award, as Josh Groll's tally was ultimately disallowed. "What happens to the number one player of the game trophy?" wonders the announcer, "Does number 12 have to go walk in the locker room and say, 'You know what, I don't deserve this, you do'?" Despite the dramatic twist, Minnesota State emerges victorious, punching their ticket to the NCAA tournament after a hard-fought, back-and-forth battle with their conference rivals, the Bemidji State Beavers.

a way to get it done proud of the guys
and then they're gonna throw it to
Commercial and the Highlight package
we'll take a break and uh we'll uh we're
gonna skip it right here I guess Don so
we'll uh head to uh confusion the
highlights and a whole lot more is the
Mavericks real confused what's going on
the place is empty they're saying the
goal is still under review oh no well
the goal is under review after all of
that maybe review it first before you do
the entire ceremony let's watch is it a
good goal is it a bad goal it is
not a goal it went underneath the net
net off The Moorings look at the puck
there and then under the net right you
can see obviously right there that is
not
a goal so do they what do they do they
did the whole damn ceremony
do they have integrity do they say hey
we need to get this right it's a big
important thing or do they say we
already did the ceremony whatever screw
it they say it's overturned we're gonna
redo the ice because it got chopped up
in the ceremony and we're gonna run it
back players get out there so the
players get out they do their warm-ups
these guys were probably just sipping on
beers if they're allowed to probably
young they're sneaking beers celebrating
now they gotta huddle back up and say
damn it guys let's do it again let's not
become the worst story The Ref checks
the Nets can't have any more funny
business at all and then we get a really
nice play here
to win it uh I'm gonna go slow-mo
because I like this play a lot because
it's a perfect breakout because look
this defenseman waits to the last second
to suck number 14 in deep and 14
finishes the play and gets the check
then we get a perfect Outlet pass on the
on the boards here just a one touch and
he sucked another player in deep and now
they're off to the race is number 20 on
defense he's just gonna fall and then
the perfect drop pass to number three or
13 who has nobody around him because the
other Defenders on uh BSU got sucked in
deep and he takes the shot and Bam now
they have won it it's real the goalie
has to be sad all over again damn it
again
number 20 just fell I don't think it
mattered much it was still a really nice
pass and a nice shot and a clean goal
and the refs are going to make sure hey
we gotta get this right this time we
gotta get it right they do they don't do
the whole ceremony again they just uh
say thanks to the fans for coming back
out and then celebrate but my question
is the game-winning goal now is number
three right so what happens
to the number one
player of the game trophy because they
didn't do the ceremony again does it get
switched does number 12 have to go walk
in the in the locker room and say hey
you know what I don't deserve this you
do because my goal didn't count and
yours did
would love to know he had to give it to
him right it's hockey they're all about
sportsmanship and teammates and Canada
