What Happened

In the bottom of the first inning with one out, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Trent Grisham settles under a fly ball hit to center field. As Grisham approaches the ball, he raises his glove hand, appearing to shield his eyes from the sun. The runner on first base, San Diego Padres first baseman Jake Cronenworth, sees Grisham's glove raised and assumes the outfielder has lost the ball in the sun. Cronenworth takes off for second base, trying to take advantage of what he believes is a dropped fly ball. However, Grisham had the ball the entire time. As Cronenworth commits to running, Grisham quickly secures the catch and throws to first base, doubling off the runner. "He puts his glove up like that, and maybe he's waving to someone, maybe he just did it," explains . "Nope, it helped him turn one out into two outs." notes that Cronenworth's body language clearly shows he was fooled by Grisham's simple glove movement. "Watch the whole body of the runner looking, 'Oh, the glove's in the air,' and you can see his whole body start to move because he's thinking, 'Oh man, if he's blinded by the sun and he drops that or it's gonna land ahead of him, I need to get to second base.'" Cronenworth "over-commits," and Grisham is able to easily double him off at first base. "I can't believe it worked," says. "Maybe it shouldn't have worked that well, but the runner, he thinks, 'Maybe he doesn't have it, maybe he's blinded by the light.' Uh-uh, no, you're a fool, and you're doubled up." The heads-up play by Grisham showcases the nuance and deception that can occur in baseball, even on a seemingly routine fly ball. "Baseball's pretty fun," concludes. "Go check out a game if you do.
