Ole Miss players goes from 1st to home on a pickoff, a breakdown
What Happened
In a college baseball matchup between Ole Miss and Alcorn State, the game takes an unexpected turn in the bottom of the inning. Ole Miss player Payton Gordon steps up to the plate with a 2-0 count. After a full-count pitch that results in a walk, the action starts to unfold. Payton Gordon reaches first base, and the tall left-handed pitcher for Alcorn State attempts a pickoff move. Gordon is safe at first, and the game continues. On the next pitch, Gordon takes off for second base and is again successful in his attempt, sliding in safely. The Alcorn State third baseman approaches the play, but no one is covering third base, and Gordon realizes he can continue his bold baserunning. Gordon takes off for third base, beating the throw and standing up safely. With the catcher now approaching third base, Gordon sees that no one is covering home plate. He immediately sprints home, scoring the run as the Alcorn State players and coaches scramble to react. The Ole Miss third base coach calmly gestures to Gordon, signaling him to go home, recognizing the defensive lapse. The catcher attempts a throw to the plate, but it's too late, and Gordon scores the run. The umpires confer briefly, likely reviewing the play, but ultimately rule that Gordon is safe at home, completing his impressive journey from first base to home plate. Throughout the sequence, Gordon remains calm and collected, seizing the opportunity presented by the defensive confusion. His grit and awareness are on full display as he navigates the bases, ultimately scoring the run and putting a smile on his face. This heads-up play by the Ole Miss player showcases the unpredictable and exciting nature of college baseball, where alert baserunning can lead to unexpected and thrilling outcomes.

Click timestamps to jump to that momenthere's a college baseball breakdown i
edited in a project that got lost and
now i found it we got ole miss versus
alcorn state never heard of you we got a
2-0 count to our dude payton who's up
way outside way outside scared of him
ran the count full gets the first base
and then mayhem is going to start here
we go says what up to that kid we got
the tall lefty up lefty on lefty lefty
pick off move
they never cut the camera oh there it is
he's safe great didn't seem like much
action
that pitch is a ball out
1-0 pick off oh they got him he was
going on the pitch but he's in there
he's safe
he collects himself he brushes his hands
off he realizes no one's covering third
base and he's off and he's running and
he's beating the third baseman but the
catcher's there and he's safe again and
he stands up and he realizes oh my god
no one's covering home plate and now
he's gonna go home and bam
scores
so he walks
he gets picked off
he's safe at second no one covers these
girls are in oh like oh my god is that
magic is that legal what happened
i love how calm and cool and collected
he is before he even realizes
[Laughter]
and then takes off
so
i mean and this one's better because the
third base coach does a little look
like he's looking at me oh well hey and
then he just looks right he goes well
that's the catcher
hey go home
simple as that is that not third base
coaching at its finest hey well go home
go home now
catcher goes to throw it but no one was
covering home
so if you want to break down this play
if you're if you don't really watch
baseball a lot and you're like well what
went wrong
the first thing and correct me if i'm
wrong by anyone the first thing that
went wrong is i don't know why the third
baseman
is running we don't have a wide shot
i'm guessing the third baseman tried to
back up the throw from the first baseman
but you have the left fielder in the
center field that should be converging
to do that
and then if it's a run down
you have the right fielder who goes to
first base the second baseman goes here
the guy the third baseman's gotta hang
out at third so i'm not sure why the
third baseman
ends up
like so close to second
i think this all stems from that the
third baseman goes there and then the
catcher you know
he didn't have a lot of time to figure
that out he actually gets there in good
time now the first baseman as soon as he
sees the catcher abandon his spot the
first baseman has to cover home and you
can see he's on his way but doesn't get
there in time so i think the third
baseman i don't know why he went to
second
he's got to stay there and then when
when you go home
you know they're a team it's a team
sport
there's got to be a rhythm and a
rotation to all of this and it just just
they just blew it and he took advantage
of it and made him look silly and the
umps get together for some reason i have
no idea what they're reviewing
but they're getting together to review
something these guys they're getting
yeah we're going to go review it like oh
wait i thought you guys were just taking
a team piss okay cool and they're just
waiting around and he's in the dugout
just laughing and he's like i just
posted up and then i realized i had to
go and then they come back and go safe
so he points at third base and says safe
so
maybe they were reviewing maybe the
catcher did get him out that's what they
thought might have happened
it was a close play but he was safe so
yeah that's
heads down baseball from uh
alcorn
heads up
from ole miss
and good for this kid he gets a walk
and three stolen bases
yeah he's safe there so that's what they
were reviewing
there you go that's a bizarre one
baseball offers a lot of weird stuff i
just love how he was smiling the whole
way home just giddy as hell
what a walk
