Odor pimps a warning track fly out, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of a close, one-run game, Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor steps up to the plate, his appearance perfectly put together with his chains, tattoos, batting gloves and armbands. Facing a 2-0 count, Odor gets the pitch he's looking for and unloads, sending a towering fly ball deep to the warning track. Odor admires his apparent blast, fixing his helmet and watching intently as the ball carries. However, Cleveland Guardians center fielder Oscar Gonzalez races back and makes a leaping grab at the wall, denying Odor a game-tying home run. Odor's enthusiastic "pimping" of the hit quickly turns to disappointment as he realizes it's just a long out. The Rangers' dugout reacts with a mix of excitement and amusement, some players laughing and others giving Odor a double high-five as he returns to the bench. Guardians pitcher Cal Quantrill, who had just given up the loud fly ball, shares a grin with his catcher, clearly enjoying the moment. As the play is shown on the video board, color commentator breaks down the sequence. He notes that while the ball would have been a home run in some ballparks, the dimensions of this particular stadium kept it in the park. concedes that Odor may have gotten a bit carried away with his home run celebration, but acknowledges the impressive power Odor generated on the swing. Replays show Odor's exaggerated bat flip and strut down the first base line, followed by the Guardians' Willie Benson making the leaping catch at the wall. points out that Odor's expected batting average on the play was .830, indicating it was struck extremely well, even though it ultimately resulted in an out. Despite the disappointment, Odor keeps his head high, tipping his cap to Benson for the highlight-reel catch. The Rangers, still trailing by a run, will have to regroup and try to mount a comeback in the late innings of this close divisional matchup.
