Noah Syndergaard wanted to finish the inning, a breakdown
What Happened
In a tightly contested game between the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants, starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard of the Mets is locked in a duel with Giants ace Madison Bumgarner. It's the bottom of the seventh inning, with the Mets holding a narrow 3-2 lead. Syndergaard starts the inning by getting Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski to line out. He then induces a groundball from first baseman Brandon Belt, but Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is unable to cleanly field it, allowing Belt to reach base. Undeterred, Syndergaard strikes out the next batter, Evan Longoria, to record the second out of the inning. With a chance to escape the jam and preserve the Mets' lead, Syndergaard gets a double-play ball from Brandon Crawford. However, Alonso elects to go for the force out at first base instead of attempting the double play and the Giants avoid the inning-ending double play. Mets manager Mickey Callaway decides to remove Syndergaard from the game, as he was nearing his pitch count limit. Syndergaard is visibly upset, pleading with Callaway to let him finish the inning. "Wow, all those teammates come up," Syndergaard says. "This is [expletive], I just want to finish this game. One more out, [expletive], won't even let me finish it." Callaway sticks to his decision and brings in right-hander Jeurys Familia to record the final out. However, Familia is unable to do so, as Longoria hits a game-tying double, scoring the tying run from third base. Syndergaard, anticipating the bullpen's failure, says, "Yeah, I know how this ends. I'm gonna go in the clubhouse so I can freak the [expletive] out." The Mets ultimately lose the game 9-3, denying Syndergaard the chance to earn the win after his strong performance. The incident highlights the tension between managers and pitchers when it comes to managing workloads and preserving leads late in games.
