No one knew what this umpire's signal was, a breakdown
What Happened
In a critical matchup between the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Guardians, right-hander Shane Bieber of the Guardians is on the mound facing off against the speedy Oswald Peraza of the Yankees. With the game in the balance, Bieber attempts a pickoff move to first base, but the umpire calls it a "disengagement" - a new rule this season that limits the number of times a pitcher can step off the rubber. Bieber, visibly confused, looks to the umpire for clarification, as manager Terry Francona of the Guardians also approaches the umpire to discuss the unusual call. The umpire explains that this is Bieber's second disengagement, meaning he can only make one more before Peraza is automatically awarded second base. Francona argues that Bieber was unaware of the new rule, but the umpire stands by his decision. Undeterred, Bieber returns to the mound and fires a slider to Peraza, who fouls it off, putting him in a 0-2 count. Peraza, sensing the increased stakes with the disengagement rule, dances off first base, forcing Bieber to be extra cautious. Bieber then delivers a fastball that Peraza narrowly avoids, leaving him still in an 0-2 hole. As Bieber prepares his next pitch, Peraza breaks for second base, but Bieber is able to hold him off, recording the final out of the inning. As Bieber walks off the mound, he turns to his catcher and says, "I don't know what the fuck this means," clearly still confused by the umpire's unusual call and the new disengagement rule. The game remains a tight pitchers' duel, with both teams struggling to score. The new rule changes have added an extra layer of strategy and uncertainty to the game, leaving players, coaches, and umpires alike grappling with the nuances of the new regulations. As the game progresses, all eyes will be on how the teams and officials navigate these evolving challenges.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentfunky situation with the new rules in
the Yankees Guardians game it's brought
to you by keeps you might go bald it's
all right don't deny it attack it keep
your hair volpe's on first he's pretty
fast Bieber's pitching a hell of a game
watch what he does with his feet here
just lifts it up and puts it down you
can't do that time boom boom boom boom
boom my hand back and forth did you see
it Bieber's like okay I guess I saw it
your hand all right steps off collects
himself thinks that's weird was he
talking to me or someone else gets back
on now you can't do that this year
because there's a pitch clock and
basically this is a very slight version
of it but once your foot comes in the
air and your knee comes up like that
even slightly
you have to go into your wind-up
otherwise the guy that's keeping track
of the pitch clock he's gonna get faked
out all the time or you could fake him
out so a lot of pitchers had to change
their delivery again this is a very
slight version but once your knee comes
up you got to go into your delivery you
can't be doing all that so they're
ruling it a disengagement meaning you
like came off the mound like a pick-off
or you stepped off and you're only
allowed two well you're allowed three
but on the third one if you don't get
the runner out he just gets second base
so they're saying that's one Bieber
doesn't know that that's what they're
saying and I actually
the disengagement was the one I was
really hesitant on but it has led to
more stolen bases and base running being
part of the sport again so I've enjoyed
it now I don't think Bieber does
something crazy different here I mean
that
he's rocking I guess the knee doesn't
that looks very similar to me but he
doesn't get called for it on that one he
does throw a Pick Off
so that is his second disengagement so
now he can throw over again but if he
doesn't get Volpe out he's automatically
out Bieber doesn't know this he just
throws a nice slider it's a glabor for
strike one now volpe's dancing again
dancing again oh he's going back he's
going to start hopping because he's
going with the pitch clock a little bit
and fastball nice pitch by Bieber Owen
two why even worry about the runner one
more strike you're out of the inning but
he decides you know what this guy might
deal with two strikes I am worried about
him didn't realize um says that's three
you get to go to Second Bieber's like
what
huh and the Umpire comes out and says so
earlier and what Francona comes out he's
like what are you talking about and then
I can't really read the lips here but
francona's just listening later on I can
read him so I told him he couldn't he'd
throw it it's three I gave him the
signal and I told him blah blah blah
blah and I think Tito's like well he
didn't know he's like well I gave him
the single he's like well no one knows
what the [ __ ] this means what are you
talking about and eventually I can read
the lips here the Umpire is going to say
I understand but I told him and after he
opened his stance a little bit I gave
him the signal and Tito's like uh don't
care didn't didn't matter no one knew
what you were talking about anyway he's
still one strike away but he goes slider
low nice block base runner stays that
second
is it reset
huh there's a reset no I have zero okay
so we just learned he's got no pick-offs
don't even worry about the runner then
just throw your pitch and he does nice
little slider pops him up last out of
the inning as he's coming off the mound
you can see him turn to his catcher and
say I don't know what the [ __ ] this
means the catcher's like yeah I mean I
don't know either I guess new signals
huh so there's a lot of new signals
everybody's got to learn I guess just
like you guys got to learn that two out
of three guys will experience hair loss
by the time they're 35 and hair loss
stops with keeps to get a special offer
