What Happened

In the 2003 MLB All-Star Game, the National League and American League are tied 7-7 in the bottom of the 11th inning. With the go-ahead run on second base, Freddy Garcia of the Chicago White Sox strikes out Rockies outfielder Preston Wilson to end the inning. However, Commissioner Bud Selig halts the game, refusing to allow it to end in a tie. Selig explains that this year, the winner of the All-Star Game will determine which league has home-field advantage in the World Series. He argues that home-field has mattered greatly in recent Game 7s and the stakes are too high to let the game end without a victor. The players, initially reluctant, now understand they must take the game seriously. In the top of the 7th inning, Braves shortstop Rafael Furcal hits a fly ball that is interfered with by a fan. Umpires initially call Furcal out, but Angels manager Mike Scioscia argues vehemently. Replay shows the fan did in fact touch the ball and Furcal should be awarded a base hit. However, the umpires ultimately rule him out, much to Scioscia's dismay. "They're going to send you back, little buddy," Scioscia says to the umpires. "We had interference - this guy almost got a finger on it!" Despite the controversial call, the National League extends their lead to 4 runs. In the 8th inning, Rangers third baseman Hank Blalock steps up and crushes a go-ahead 2-run home run for the American League, tying the game. Yankees star Alex Rodriguez enthusiastically applauds from the dugout, joking "I'm out of here, I hate Texas!" Ultimately, the American League wins the 2003 All-Star Game, securing home-field advantage for the World Series. However, Selig's rule change proves inconsequential, as neither league's champion ends up needing the extra home game to win the Fall Classic.
