What Happened

The New York Yankees host the Tampa Bay Rays in a close game at Yankee Stadium. Rays pitcher Blake Snell has a strong outing, striking out Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks in his first game back from the injured list. However, Snell is hit by a pitch on the foot but does not get checked by the umpires, leading to him striking out on the next pitch. Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez struggles, striking out four times and grounding into a game-ending double play. The only Yankees run comes on a wild pitch by Snell. Rays catcher Travis d'Arnaud, their fifth catcher of the season, has trouble getting on the same page with Snell as the Rays' catchers have dealt with multiple injuries. Yankees second baseman DJ LeMahieu makes a great defensive play up the middle. Rays pitcher Tyler Glasnow leaves the game after being hit by a comebacker, but x-rays show it's just a contusion. Rays outfielder Austin Meadows hits a go-ahead home run in the 11th inning to give Tampa Bay the win. In the New York Mets-Miami Marlins game, Marlins outfielder Harold Ramirez records his first career home run to open the scoring. Marlins pitcher Pablo Lopez throws seven scoreless innings, leading Miami to their third straight win. Mets manager Mickey Callaway faces questions about his job security after the loss. The Cincinnati Reds defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0 behind a strong outing from pitcher Tyler Miley, who earns his first win of the season. Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler pitches well but is hurt by some poor defense behind him, leading to unearned runs. In the Detroit Tigers-Oakland Athletics game, Tigers pitcher Spencer Turnbull has a solid outing, inducing weak contact. A's outfielder Chad Pinder and first baseman Seth Brown both hit home runs to provide the offense for Oakland. The Baltimore Orioles fall to the Cleveland Indians 5-1, with Orioles pitcher John Means struggling and Indians pitcher Adam Plutko tossing six innings of one-hit ball. Indians outfielder Oscar Mercado records his first major league hit. Finally, Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper crushes a mammoth home run over the center field batter's eye, while Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola strikes out 12 batters in a dominant outing.
