Max Scherzer freaks out after replay review doesn't go Toronto's way, a breakdown
What Happened
The Toronto Blue Jays are taking on the New York Mets in a close game, with the score tied in the late innings. In the top of the 8th, the Mets have a runner on base with one out. New York Mets pitcher Mackenzie Gore is on the mound, facing Blue Jays outfielder George Springer. Gore throws a series of fastballs, eventually walking Springer to put runners on first and second. Up next is Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who lays down a beautiful bunt to advance the runners. The camera follows the ball's trajectory in a smooth, tracking shot. Miles Straw is the next batter for Toronto, and he hits a shallow fly ball to center field. The Mets' center fielder dives but can't make the catch, allowing the runners to advance. The play at the plate is close, and the umpire initially calls the runner out. However, Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo challenges the call, and the replay review officials take a close look from multiple camera angles. After careful consideration, they overturn the call, ruling the runner safe. This sparks an impassioned reaction from Mets pitcher Max Scherzer, who vehemently disagrees with the decision. "What do we have that replay for?" Scherzer shouts, his striking blue eyes reflecting his frustration. "Come on. What the [ __ ] are you doing?" The Mets dugout shares Scherzer's disbelief, with the players and coaches all visibly upset by the overturned call. The inning continues, with the next Mets batter lining a ball to center field. The Blue Jays' center fielder makes a diving catch to end the threat and preserve the tie game. It's an eventful, back-and-forth sequence that showcases the intensity of the rivalry between these two teams and the high stakes of the late-inning drama.

Sherzer's upset about the call after the
replay review. This breakdown is brought
to you by MLB9 innings. I went back to
the start of the inning here because the
whole thing I thought was just kind of
good baseball on display. We got
McKenzie Gore on the mound. He struck
out a bajillion people in his first
start of the season. That's a fast ball
off. That's a fast ball off. That's a
fast ball low. And that's a fast ball
low and away. I think he wanted that
last one, but it's a leadoff walk and
he's like, um, not into that. Next up,
the mustache man with the glasses.
Looking good. Two-1 pitch. He pops it up
and we've got a nice easy catch in
center field. Kaboom. One out, runner on
first. Now the fun is set up. Here he
is. Oh yeah. High knees up. said hi to
me in spring training. Hello. What a
beautiful bunt. They were playing back.
Need to get that down because there's
one out already. He loves it. First and
second now. Now I love this. I got to
shout out the camera operator here cuz
this is such a cool shot. Watch this
tracking shot from the pitcher's face.
Tracks the ball the whole way. Stays
with the bunt. Zooms in on the ball.
Beautiful stuff. Next up is Miles Straw.
We got one out, two on. Curveball in the
zone. Fast ball above the zone. 0 and
two. Fast ball low and away. Curve ball
away. Two- two pitch. Put in the air.
Chasing it. Chasing it. Chasing it. Off
the glove onto the ground. The runner is
like, "Oh [ __ ] what do I do?" He had to
go back. Now he's rounding. Now the play
is at home plate and out. And he says,
"No, no, no, no, no, no. I think no, no,
no. I think come on." Just so many blue
eyes in this sequence. That's just
something I wanted to let you guys know.
Everyone's kind of just looking around
like, "What happened? What is it?" The
replay is awesome. I pieced together all
the replays to show the full story at
once. So, we're tracking the ball. It's
off the glove. Off the glove. So, the
runner's got to figure it out. First,
he's like, "Oh, [ __ ] Did he catch it? I
got to tag up." And he's like, "No, go,
go, go, go, go." He didn't catch it.
That slows him down a bit. Relay home is
just a straight race from center field.
Perfect throw right on the money. Good
slide and umpire had his position. He
says, "Out." He says, "No, I don't think
so." Again, my camera operator. I don't
know your name. I wish I did so I could
shout it out. He's killing the game.
This time he's tracking the runner and
he's getting put in a little dance. He
doesn't care. He picks him up. This
guy's a pro. Obviously, he's a
professional camera operator, but I'm
just saying kudos to him. They review
it. They have eight different angles of
the slide at home plate between the two
broadcasts and the stadium. Eight
different angles were used to get this
call correct in replay. And the call
is that looks like safe, right? He tags
him in the face. Oh, you gotta love you
gotta love Clement coming up just
yelling safe. Nope. um says out. They
see the replay. They're looking at it
like, uh, what am I supposed to be
looking at here? What are we trying to
pick up? Okay, here's another angle. And
that makes it look safe. Makes it look
like he didn't touch his arm at all.
Right. Right
there. By the time he touches his
helmet, looks out. So, this review, this
angle looks like he's safe and he didn't
get tagged until he touched him in the
face. And they're all watching that one
and Clement's like, "Oh yeah, safe.
Safe. We love it. Blue Jays dugout saw
that one. They love it." But this is the
angle that I think causes confusion
because I think right
there they're like maybe his glove hit
his hand right here. It's not
definitive. Maybe maybe right there. I
think that's what they're saying. Maybe
right there his glove hit his hand
rendering him out and he's like, "Oh,
that's what we're looking at. Okay, I
still I'm not fully processing it. Can
you show me again?" And there's another
angle. But at that
time, it's pretty
clear to me it didn't hit his
hand, but it's kind of not in frame
there. Definitely tags him in the face.
If I had no context, if the original
call did not stand, if I did not have to
take that into account, I would say he
was safe and that that glove didn't
touch him. They need to be 100 million
thousand% sure or overturn the call. And
I think that angle that I showed you,
they're saying we're not 100,000
million% sure to overturn this. And it's
this right here. But when you sync that
up with other angles, it doesn't really
look close. It's just this angle that
looks like he might be touching his
hand. The other angles don't show it.
Anyway, they go, they come out from
under the hood and they say
[Music]
runners out.
No [ __ ] way. No [ __ ]
way. What the [ __ ] Oh my god.
[ __ ] What do we have that replay for?
Come on. Sher's got the one blue eye.
He's adding to blue eye gang. You know
he's got the one. What the [ __ ] Are you
kidding me, bro? Hey, what the [ __ ] is
that about? What are you doing? Look at
these. Look at these baby blues. Oh,
yeah. From one baby blue to another baby
blue. Yep. To another. Yep. And the
inning continues. The next batter is
going to put one into center field. Is
that going to score two? No diving
catch. Let's go. What an inning. Good
baseball. Crazy baseball. A nice bunt. A
nice diving play. Some good hits. Oh
yeah. Did you see that ball? Snow Conan
right there in that glove.
