What Happened

Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies steps up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning with his team trailing the New York Mets 6-0. On the first pitch, Harper believes it is outside the strike zone, but the umpire calls it a strike. Harper calmly but firmly disagrees, stating "That's not a strike, that's a ball. It's my opinion, just throwing it out there." The next pitch is fouled off by Harper, putting him in an 0-2 count. He again expresses his disagreement with the umpire's call, saying "Now it should be 1-1, and I'm just like, come on dude, quit it, just let it go." Harper then fouls off another pitch before taking an inside pitch, clapping his hands in approval. On the next pitch, Harper flies out to center field for the first out of the inning. As he returns to the dugout, he is visibly frustrated, and the bat boy comes to place his bat, apologizing and saying he hopes Harper doesn't mind. Harper remains upset, and the umpire then ejects him from the game. Phillies manager Joe Girardi rushes out to argue the ejection, asking why the umpire didn't give Harper a warning first. The umpire responds that he had already given Harper two warnings. Girardi acknowledges that Harper probably shouldn't have continued arguing, but still defends his player, saying he had to come out and "protect him a little bit." As Harper walks away, the crowd erupts in a cheer, showing their support for their frustrated star player. The Phillies go on to lose the game 6-0, but Harper's passionate response to the umpire's calls has left a lasting impression on the fans and the baseball community.
