Bruce Bochy Gets Ejected For Arguing After Belt gets Rung Up, a breakdown
What Happened
In a tense matchup, the San Francisco Giants are facing off against their divisional rival. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the score is tight and the Giants are trailing by one run. San Francisco's first baseman Brandon Belt steps up to the plate, hoping to spark a late-inning rally. The first pitch from the opposing pitcher comes in and home plate umpire Alan Porter quickly calls it a strike. Belt doesn't agree with the call and the very next pitch is also ruled a strike by Porter. Frustrated, Belt expresses his displeasure to the umpire, feeling that the pitches were not strikes. Sensing his player's growing frustration, Giants manager Bruce Bochy emerges from the dugout to argue the calls. Bochy calmly explains to Porter that the replays show the pitches were clearly off the plate, but the young umpire is unwilling to budge on his decisions. Tensions escalate and in a surprising move, Porter ejects Bochy from the game for his continued protests. "It's not close, that's just not a strike," Bochy can be heard telling Porter, referring to the third strike call that led to Belt's strikeout. Bochy tries to reason with the umpire, explaining that the evidence from the video replay confirms his players' perspective, but Porter remains steadfast in his rulings. As Bochy is escorted off the field, he continues to plead his case, clearly frustrated by the umpire's unwillingness to admit the mistakes. "You can see it, it's four inches off the plate," Bochy says, trying to make one last appeal to Porter's better judgment. The Giants dugout is visibly upset by the turn of events, as their manager is ejected for simply advocating for his player. The fans in attendance also express their displeasure, sensing that their team has been unfairly disadvantaged by the umpire's calls. Despite Bochy's best efforts, the damage has been done and the Giants are unable to mount a comeback in the final inning, ultimately falling to their rivals. As the teams leave the field, the Giants' players and coaching staff are left to wonder what might have been if not for the controversial strike calls and Bochy's resulting ejection.
