What Happened

In the bottom of the sixth inning, San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt steps up to the plate. With the game situation and score unknown, Belt swings and hits the ball hard. As the ball travels, Belt watches intently, believing he has gotten enough of it to send it over the fence for a home run. "Keep going, keep going," Belt mutters to himself, willing the ball to carry. However, the ball dies short of the outfield wall and Belt realizes his assumption was incorrect. Frustrated, Belt slams his bat to the ground, exclaiming, "Ah, why did you [expletive] stop, stupid ball [expletive]?" Giants manager Gabe Kapler, watching from the dugout, simply shrugs and says, "Wasn't that hard to catch, pretty simple. Never had a chance." The camera then pans to the Giants' bullpen, where an amusing scene unfolds. A ball appears to accidentally be knocked over, spilling its contents all over the area. "Oh, thank god," one of the pitchers says with relief, seemingly glad the mess was not more serious. The play highlights Belt's competitive nature and his disappointment at not delivering a home run for his team. While the Giants' skipper takes the missed opportunity in stride, the bullpen hijinks provide a lighthearted contrast to the main action. Though Belt did not accomplish his goal of hitting a home run, the sequence captures the emotional rollercoaster of a close, competitive baseball game.
