Boston College goes brain dead at end of game, a breakdown
What Happened
In a crucial ACC matchup, the Boston College Eagles and the NC State Wolfpack are locked in a nail-biting finish. With just over a minute remaining, Boston College holds a slim 76-75 lead. BC's number 24, Makai Ashton-Langford, has the ball and an opportunity to extend the Eagles' advantage. He pulls up for a jumper, but the shot comes up short, an embarrassing airball. NC State's number 10, Terquavion Smith, gives Ashton-Langford a light tap on the back, adding insult to the mistake. Boston College has another chance to pad their lead, but they miss the shot. NC State takes possession and number 2, Jarkel Joiner, breaks the ankles of BC's number 4, DeMarr Langford Jr. before knocking down a go-ahead jumper to give the Wolfpack a one-point lead. Ashton-Langford then approaches Smith, saying, "We're winning now," as NC State takes the lead. On the ensuing possession, Smith steals the ball from Ashton-Langford, getting his revenge on the court. With just 14 seconds remaining and NC State clinging to a one-point advantage, Boston College head coach Earl Grant looks on in dismay as his team fails to foul and stop the clock. The Wolfpack run out the clock and with 2.3 seconds left, Boston College has no choice but to heave a desperation shot that falls short. "Oh man, oh shit, I guess that's on me. I should have taught them better," laments Coach Grant, clearly frustrated by his team's mental lapse in the final moments. Number 24 Ashton-Langford has more words for Smith, but the damage has already been done. Boston College has gone "brain dead" in the closing seconds, allowing NC State to escape with a hard-fought 77-76 victory.
