What Happened

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale faces off against the New York Yankees in a close divisional matchup. The game is tied 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning when tensions begin to boil over between Sale and home plate umpire Angel Hernandez. Throughout the game, Sale has been frustrated with Hernandez's strike zone, feeling he has not been getting the calls he deserves. As the bases load with the game still knotted, Red Sox manager Alex Cora storms out to the mound for a mound visit. However, Cora uses this opportunity to vehemently argue with Hernandez about the umpiring. "You f***ed us up," Cora yells. "That's a f***ing strike right there. That's a strike and that's about five f***ing pitches you've missed." Hernandez remains calm and collected, ignoring Cora's pleas. "Let's go get it right, let's go," Cora continues. "You're helping them, you're not helping our guys get it right." However, Hernandez ejects both Cora and Sale from the game for their outbursts. With the Red Sox now without their manager and ace pitcher, the Yankees seize the opportunity. DJ LeMahieu steps up and crushes a go-ahead solo home run, taking advantage of the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium. The very next batter, Aaron Judge, rips a double, further infuriating Sale. As Sale heads to the dugout, he angrily confronts the Red Sox's pitching coach. "What was that first one, was that a strike?" Sale asks, referring to a previous pitch. The coach confirms that yes, the pitch was indeed a strike, much to Sale's dismay. "That's a f***ing joke," Sale says, before Hernandez ejects him from the game as well. The ejections of Cora and Sale leave the Red Sox without their two most important figures and the Yankees capitalize to secure a crucial victory in the heated rivalry. The loss is a tough one for the struggling Red Sox, who have now fallen 4.5 games behind the first-place Yankees in the AL East standings.
