Twins and White Sox Are all confused on a dropped line drive, a breakdown
What Happened
In a close game between the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox, veteran pitcher Rich Hill of the Twins is struggling with his command, walking the first three batters he faces in the inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Hill induces a shallow fly ball that the Twins' second baseman, Jorge Polanco, appears to catch. However, the umpires do not call the infield fly rule, leaving the runners free to advance at their own risk. Polanco then drops the ball and chaos ensues. The White Sox baserunners, including Luis Robert, are unsure of how to react. Polanco quickly throws to second base, getting one out, but the umpires must confer to sort out the proper call. They ultimately determine that Robert is out on the force play, while the other runners are safe. The confusion continues as the Twins and White Sox players, as well as the umpires, try to make sense of the play. Catcher Yasmani Grandal of the White Sox appears to be the only one who fully understands the situation, though he doesn't reveal his knowledge right away. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli comes out to discuss the call with the umpires, who explain their reasoning. Despite the chaos, the umpires manage to get the call correct, much to the relief of the Twins' dugout. However, the damage is done, as the two White Sox runners score and Hill is eventually removed from the game, visibly frustrated with the outcome. The incident highlights the complexity of baseball's rules and the importance of quick thinking and decision-making by players and umpires alike. While the Twins ultimately come up short in this particular game, the unique and bizarre nature of the play will surely be a topic of discussion for fans and analysts alike.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentwe had one of those baseball as weird
and beautiful moments
in the twins white sox game last week
this one's brought to you by draftkings
rich hills on the bump
and he's walking everybody walks the
lead off hitter then he's going to walk
mccann then he's going to walk the next
batter just can't find the zone
does get squeezed on a couple calls not
that one not that one
that one maybe you get the call there
anyway he walks robert
so now you got bases loaded no outs
gotta get out of it okay little flare
shot can probably get two out of that at
least
one what's going on he's
out okay he's snow call and he's
safe what everyone's looking around what
uh him and her
what that's two outs no
what hold up okay here's what happened
ready
they did not call the infield fly rule
which would mean the batters out
automatically and the runners advance at
their own
will or whatever does he drop this on
purpose because the best case is he
catches this
and then maybe fires it to first to try
and double up robert but ceno's not even
covering the bag
so catching it gets you one out now if
once he drops it
and they don't rule that he dropped it
on purpose they let it roll
at this point i mean if he just he grabs
this ball
if he fires that home he gets the force
out at home and then the catcher can
throw it to third
and get the force out at third and
that's an
easy two outs maybe you can throw it to
second
and get robert who was running backwards
to first and get a triple play
maybe but i think you're you're
guaranteed if you come home
one out on the force out and then to
third second out on the force out
he doesn't do that he immediately turns
to second
and flips it over here and now
robert's out so this base runner is out
on the force play
because he has to run the second they
beat him so then they throw to first
and cenote tags robert but he's already
out and mendix on first
it's his bag so you can't get robert out
twice so there's no call there
and then they go back to second and he's
safe
so that's what happened the umps got it
correct good job by the umps they didn't
call infield flight i wonder
if cause once he drops it all the white
sox runners like the runner on third
should be bombing for home because
the bases were loaded and you have to
run so i wonder if
they thought there was an infield fly if
someone yelled one of the third base
coach or first base coach yelled in
fieldfly
and that's why everyone acted like this
but everyone seemed to act
off besides the umps who got it right
now this is what i don't know
mccann's on second here when he catches
it
i guess that gets robert out but not
mccann even though he's on the
that's interesting to me but you know
he's safe and the other thing is did
mccann
know what was happening or did he just
get incredibly lucky
because if he doesn't think it's an
infield fly he should be running right
away and then once they go that way
and then he comes back did he realize
that robert was out so the force was off
and now it's a tag play and come back or
did he just get lucky
i have no idea but he's giggling like
i'm not telling i don't know i'm gonna
let you think i'm a genius
then the umpires get together and they
try to figure out what they have then
you can hear them explain it to rocco
buldelli
do you want to know what we got all you
got is the fourth
second okay
[Music]
ask him for a ball say hey can i have a
ball
hill giving his catcher lessons and how
to properly ask for a baseball
ask him for a ball say hey can i have a
ball so anyway they're like yeah he's
safe
he's safe and robert he's ready in the
dugout he's out we got it right
rich hill's like oh okay i guess cool
cool i'll just
you know get the double play now he
doesn't get the double play
the two runners score rich hill gets
taken
out of the game which he's not happy
