Reds and Giants benches clear, a breakdown
What Happened
Bad blood in the National League. The Reds and the Giants in a little multi-game saga last week.
Why This Matters
Spencer Steer and Brewbaker's weird eye contact standoff turned into a full bench-clearing blowup, and Jomboy breaks down exactly how a batter's timeout call spiraled into absolute chaos. If you've ever wondered what the actual rules are when things get heated, this is the one.

Reds and the Giants in a little
multi-game saga last week. Spencer
Steer, young righty, up at the dish.
Brewbaker, a vet at this point. First
pitch, up and in, right where he wants
it. Let's throw that again. Gets the
swing on it. So, he's got him 0-2. He
says, "Time." "Time, that's two strikes.
I'd like to take a breather just in case
this next pitch is a strike, then I
don't get a chance to take a breather."
Steps back in the box and then he's
like, "Hey, he's not looking at me,
blue." And he says, "Oh, HE WAS LOOKING
RIGHT AT ME." He already called time. He
only gets "HE LOOKED RIGHT BACK at me."
What are you talking about? So, if
you're new to baseball, there's a rule
that the batter and the pitcher have to
have eye contact. It's kind of a safety
rule. Everyone is engaged in play, no
trickery, and basically the batter only
gets to call time out once. He already
did that. And he's saying that now this
batter is saying, "Hey, blue, he's not
He didn't look at me before he came into
his windup." And the pitcher is saying
he was looking like he say, "Hey, he was
looking right at me. That's why I went
into my windup. Don't just listen to
him." And the umpire is like, "Hey, I
don't know what to do, guys. Just be
[ __ ] honest about who's looking at
who." And Brewbaker in his postgame
said, like, "I like to use the clock to
my advantage. I like to game it." Well,
he doesn't like it when people do it
back to him. But mostly,
right now, he's mad at the umpire. He's
not really mad at the batter. He thinks
the umpire should not have done that. He
doesn't mind the batter doing it, and
we're going to move forward with the
game. And now he's like, "You [ __ ]
I'm holding this ball to 1 second. You
want to play games? I'll play games.
We're just going to stand here till this
clock ticks, ticks, ticks, ticks, three,
two, one. Bam." And then it's
[clears throat] a nice hit.
Nice piece of hitting by Steer. Another
good pitch, I think low and in, he
wanted that. And he gets to first base.
But there was a lot of jawing after the
ball was hit. So, the replay showed that
Spencer Steer, as Brewbaker was holding
him, he's muttering, "Fuck you, throw
the [ __ ] ball." And then uh he throws
the ball and he hits it. And then he
says, "THAT'S RIGHT, MOTHERFUCKER." And
yelling at him. So, you know, just riled
up in the moment. Brewbaker didn't even
notice or see this. He's mad at the
umpire. He's "Come on, dude."
"Why you got to break my rhythm?" He's
yelling at the umpire. Umpire comes out
to yell back at him. Catcher is like,
"Yo, yo, chill out. Chill out." Matt
Chapman, his third baseman, he's going
to come and he gives Matt Chapman a
little pat on the butt. He's like, "I'm
fine, dude. I'm just really mad at the
umpire right now." And he's like, "All
right. Okay, we're good." Like Spencer
Steer kind of motherfucked you around as
he was running the bases.
Fast forward to the next game. Starting
pitcher is up. Spencer Steer is up. And
at this point, the clip of him saying,
"Fuck you, throw the [ __ ] ball." has
gone viral, and I think they've seen it.
And while they weren't really upset with
him in the moment, I think they saw that
in between games and were like, "All
right, dude, you're about to wear one
cuz that's how baseball works. We're men
with weapons, and we throw them at you."
And he hits him. First pitch, pretty
intentional, just stares at him.
I mean, hard to say that's not
intentional at when he's looking like
that and fired up. And the whole Giants
team was talking about how like they
like the intensity. They want to ratchet
it up. And Steer takes his base, no real
qualms. Didn't hit him in the head, I
guess. He's like, "All right, I guess
that's what's going to happen here." And
no apology, no nothing, just a nice
fastball to the ribs. Oh, and a little
"Okay."
Now, later in the game, this doesn't
really have to do much with the bad
blood and the drama, but you guys should
see it. And maybe maybe it did, who
knows. Arraez puts one in play. Center
fielder chasing it down, chasing it
down. Did he catch it? No, but do they
say he did? Yes. Pitcher loves it. Thank
you. Thank you. Tip of the hat. Great
catch, man. And thanks for being honest
about it. And he's walking around. He's
like,
"Are they going to challenge? Don't show
the replay. Are they What's going to
They're out of challenges cuz that ball
was in his glove, and then bam,
out of his glove. And I don't even think
he really
tried to sell this. It just got called a
catch. He In this video, in this clip
right here, calling for it in the glove,
pops out. Like he does corral it right
away. He doesn't come up holding it in
his hand showing the umpire. And his
face right here is just like,
"So, then okay." And this face is like,
"What?
What?"
>> [laughter]
>> That's a great reaction. Later in the
eighth inning, they're throwing at Willy
Adames. He had a home run earlier in the
game, so it could be that. Also could be
you hit our player, and we don't think
it was deserved that you hit our player
because he did nothing to you. So, now
we're going to hit your player. And
first pitch was thrown at him.
Manager Matheny is like,
"What's going on? We got a fight? Okay."
And then the next pitch, again, right at
his leg. And you see Willy Adames throw
the bat and look at him. And you see
Phillips
walk towards him. So, then you see the
helmet come off. You know, a little bit
of a a standoff here. "I'm looking at
you. What are you going to do?" And
Phillips is like, "I'm going to keep
walking towards you if that's the play."
And then the umpire is like, "Hey, hey,
hey, hey.
Come on. Let's go." And Adames is just
going to look at him all cute like,
like, "Yeah, dude. Yeah." And Phillips
is like, "Yeah, dude. Yeah.
That's what it's about." And the dugouts
come out and they're like, "Yeah? We
Everyone We
on?" And Tito is like, and the bullpen
is like, "What? We Someone tell us like
give us a sign.
Uh no?
Yes?"
Ramos is fired up. He's still mad about
that fake catch. And then they say,
"You're out of here cuz that was on
purpose." And Phillips is like, "Good
call. Yeah. Don't disagree. No qualms."
Tito comes out and he's like, "What's
going on?" He's like, "Well, you guys
are throwing at them, and everyone's
throwing at each other, and that was
intentional." And Tito is like, "All
right, cool.
Um He's like, "Yeah, you know, it hurt.
You guys mad? You mad?" And it's another
just lower on the leg. Probably better
than the ribs. Although everything
hurts.
They just wear it, these baseball
players. Like that hurt so bad. All
right, so now,
one more strike and the game is over.
And Miller is in, and there's just been
high emotions, high drama. We want to
get the save here. We're fired up.
STRIKE THREE. COME ON.
SIT THE [ __ ] DOWN. "HEY, [ __ ]
WATCH YOUR [ __ ] MOUTH."
"YOU SHUT THE [ __ ] UP." "AND [ __ ] YOU,
[ __ ] GET THE [ __ ] OUT OF HERE. [ __ ]
ALL you guys."
"And [ __ ] you. [ __ ] you. [ __ ] you. [ __ ]
you."
"Everyone. Yeah. Why? For what?
For what?
Huh?" And then after the game, Miller is
like, "I mean, I'm just fired up. I said
something that he doesn't want to hear,
so I understand it. But, you know,
adrenaline's pumping. I'm mad, fired
up." And I think the saga's over, but
we'll see next time they play each other
cuz this was the last game of the
series. So, we're on watch for the next
time these two teams meet, which is
August 24th.
Remind everyone.
Thank you very much for watching. This
breakdown was brought to you by Trevor
