match against Venezuela. And Akuna's up
who takes strike one and then a little
check swing foul ball on strike two.
This one's brought to you by Shady Rays.
Ow and two foul ball. Third baseman
grabs it, flips it. Umpire calls it.
Next pitch, another little safety swing
smothered by the foot of the third base
coach. Grabbed and discarded.
One and two. He finally doesn't swing.
And then he lays off another one. He's
feeling good about himself now. I'm not
swinging at your junk no more. You're
going to have to bring into the zone and
I'm going to smack it. It's got to be in
the zone now. This one's above the zone.
Did he swing? Yes, says umpire Dan
Sonia. AND HE'S LIKE, "OH,
WHAT?" I LIKED how he was pointing at
him like, "Come on, avenge me. Blue,
you're on my side, right? You got me."
NO. DAMN. COME ON, MAN.
Come on. That's no swing. what are you
doing? And then Dan just kind of I do
you guys remember this? I remember maybe
I never posted it, but I did a breakdown
last year about check swing that Dan
Ionia called all the check swings and I
remember going into the research and I
was trying to find like does he just
call everything a swing? I that's either
a fever dream or I did it. I can't
remember. Anyway, here's the It didn't
look like a swing from the live shot,
but then you get the side view, and
yeah, that surely looks like a swing. It
looks like if he met that ball
perfectly, timed it well, could have
blooped it over the shortstop's head,
maybe. Who knows if the pitch had enough
power. I just love that he pointed to
the umpire like, "Yep, tell him, tell
him." And then, no, he didn't tell him.
It doesn't have that second level of
swing where like the wrist break which
is what they used to call. But I think
even in that minor league system where
it has to go 45° or whatever they use
that they're I I want them to bring. I
want check swings to not be ambiguous
anymore and like the audience will just
know. I think this would be ruled a
swing cuz if he hits the ball that can
get some pop behind it. Next batter
Michael Garcia steps up. is going to
take a ball low and Akunia still John at
the umpire in the dugout and then Miggy
Cavs is going to race down there and I
think he's you know coaches try to take
the heat off the player so hey I don't
want Akuna to get kicked out of this
game so I'll run down there and if
anyone kicked out it's me I'll
antagonize the ump next pitch is low now
he's looking at him he says hey Dan
LET'S [ __ ] GO AND THEN Dan I staring
straight ahead I'm not looking at you I
think he was looking at him earlier and
he peaks you know a guy's yelling at
you. You're going to stare at him. And
that comes up because Mig Cavs is like
trying to get his attention still. Maybe
to get the heat off Akuna. The two-
pitch poured in there for a strike. And
then it cuts back to the dugout. And
they're still yelling at the umpire. And
I'm not positive on this one, but it
looks like he's saying something about
don't stare me down. Don't stare me
down. You stare me down. Huh? Now he's
staring right at him. He's like, "Yeah,
I am staring at you because you're
yelling at me." And it's kind of normal
and human nature to look at someone
who's yelling at you. Back to the game.
the 2-1 fast ball 94 miles per hour in
there. Little conversation with the ump.
Now, I've I've asked players before
like, "Hey, what do you say?" And they
said, usually you'd ask something like,
"Is that the edge?" And that means, you
know, is that as far inside as they can
come with you calling it a strike? And
it looks like maybe it's along those
lines like, "Hey, is that the edge of
the zone?" Yeah, okay, got it. Or is
that low? Is that inside? Two two pitch.
He slows it down to 79 miles per hour.
It was 94 and then that is a change up
at 79 miles per hour. And you can see
how out ahead he is. Look at that. He's
so out ahead. So, he got him fooled, but
he was able to foul it off and stay
alive, which is crucial. So, after the
79 mph, what does he do? Is he going to
speed him back up to 94? No. He goes
with a slider, which is 85 mph. So, he
meets in the middle. And again, it's not
what Garcia is looking for, but he's
able to fight it off. He's offbalance.
He's not timing the off speed. So, what
do we do here? We go back to an 86 mph.
again fouled off. Play made. Grabs it.
Secures it. Now, I would say if I was
the catcher and pitcher, okay, he he
wants the fast ball. He's not changing
his timing to try and hit these other
pitches. He's just fighting them off.
Maybe we stay there. We have one more
ball to work with. We put one even more
out of the zone. If he thinks he can
foul everything off to stay alive, let's
test the limits of his reach and his
balance to foul off an off speed. I
would not go back to the fast ball
because it seems like he's just waiting.
I'm going to foul everything off till I
get that fast. They go back to the fast
ball and it gets absolutely smoked for a
two-run home run to make a 5-2 game, a
five to four game. Venezuela dugout
erupts. They're back in this thing. It's
a one-run ball game. Akuna takes the
opportunity to yell at the umpires some
more. And Cabrera's like, "Hey, hey,
hey, hey, hey. I'm trying to take the
heat off you. Don't put it back on
yourself. Come on. I'm doing it. I'm
talking to him. CELEBRATE WITH YOUR BOY.
HEY. HEY. Come on. We just hit a home
run. Let's go. Jeez. FAMOS.
GREAT AT BAT by Garcia. Great at bat.
Didn't give in. Wasn't going to change
his approach. Trusted his ability to
foul off the breaking pitches and the
and the offspe pitches so he could get
the fast ball. Got the fast ball.
Absolutely handled it and hit a home
run. THESE GUYS LOVE IT. VAMO. OH, LOOK
AT THIS KID. OH, come on. Is that not
just pure joy? You got That's got to
melt your heart just a teeny bit. Okay,
back to it. They're celebrating,
enjoying themselves, still celebrating.
One- runun game. They're going to do it.
They believe. I'm home. And Miguel
Cabrera's like, "I'm on to you, Dan.
You're looking at me. Why you looking at
me? Enjoy the home run. We know you like
baseball, too. Even though you're an
umpire, he's like, "Hey, hey, hey. I'm
not going to look at you anymore. I'm
not going to look at you. And he's like,
"Hey, stop talking to him." I'm talking
to him. Okay, you stop talking to him.
Here's the replay. Fast ball. He doesn't
want it that high. The pitcher batter
does. Garcia's like, "Yeah, thank God.
That's what I was hoping you would bring
to me." Boom. Here it is. Ump cam.
Slow-mo. Woo! Right there. I mean, that
that is about as juicy. I know we're
watching it in slow motion, but still.
You want to watch it in fast motion?
Let's do a little fix the edit. Here it
is. Bam. Hammered. And you know what?
There was a phenomenal play made behind
the wall. These two gloves appear and
the first glove you're like, "Wow, dude.
Are you running and jumping over the
railing? Are you gonna reach that?" And
then last second, Black Glove just
steals it. Makes the grab. Mickey Cabs
celebrates with Garcia. And then in the
bottom of the fifth inning, we get
another check swing. This time, of
course, that's a swing, too. And Mickey
Cab says, "Okay, fair is fair. Fair is
fair. If you're going to call it a
swing, just call it a swing. Just don't
