What Happened

The Diamondbacks and Dodgers are tied as the game enters the bottom of the eighth inning. Diamondbacks outfielder Lou Montanez steps up to the plate, known for his incredible speed. Dodgers catcher Russell Martin tries to get cute with his pitch selection, faking inside before going outside. Martin ends up striking Montanez out, but then forgets to catch the third strike, allowing Montanez to reach base easily. Montanez wastes no time, immediately taking off for second base. Martin attempts to throw him out but the throw is off the mark, letting Montanez advance to third base safely. Diamondbacks outfielder Adam Jones then steps up and pokes a single, bringing Montanez home to give Arizona the lead. With Jones on first, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts checks on him but forgets to step off the rubber, resulting in an automatic balk call. The umpire signals the balk, allowing Jones to take second base. The Diamondbacks players and fans erupt in celebration at the costly mistake by Roberts. Reliever Archie Bradley then strikes out the next Dodgers batter, leaving runners on first and third with one out. Bradley induces a groundout from Justin Turner to end the inning, preserving the Diamondbacks' one-run lead. The Diamondbacks' rally in the eighth was sparked by a combination of Montanez's speed, Martin's mistakes behind the plate, Jones' clutch hitting and Roberts' balk. This game-changing sequence has the Diamondbacks on the verge of a big win over their division rivals, the Dodgers.
