Umpires leave the Orioles and Diamondbacks confused because they didn't make a call, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the ninth inning of a close game between the Baltimore Orioles and the Arizona Diamondbacks, the action on the field quickly turns chaotic as the umpires fail to make clear calls. With the Orioles trailing by two runs and the bases loaded, outfielder Cedric Mullins of the Orioles hits a line drive that is caught by Diamondbacks left fielder David Peralta. Peralta attempts to make a quick throw home, but it sails wide, allowing one run to score. The other Orioles runners advance and the Diamondbacks infielders argue that a runner did not properly tag up. The umpires, led by home plate umpire Brian O'Nora, appear unsure of what has transpired. None of them make any definitive calls, leaving the players, coaches and fans confused about the status of the runners and the score. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde comes out to discuss the play with the umpires, but they are unable to provide a clear explanation. As the confusion continues, Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker and outfielder Tyler O'Neill leave their positions, seemingly unsure of what is happening. Orioles outfielder Austin Hays remains on the field, chewing his gum, while Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. stands alone in left field, biting his necklace as he waits for a resolution. Eventually, the umpires confer and determine that Mullins had properly tagged up at third base, but O'Neill had not tagged up at second. The run scores, but O'Neill is ruled out. The Orioles challenge the catch by Peralta, but the call is upheld. The Diamondbacks' challenge of the tag-up at second base is also upheld. "We're in a bit of a mess here," says one of the umpires, as they struggle to sort out the various plays and calls. Ultimately, the umpires manage to reach the correct decision, but the process is convoluted and leaves both teams and the crowd bewildered. "Why did that take so long?" asks Orioles manager Brandon Hyde, echoing the frustration of everyone watching the bizarre sequence of events unfold.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentBaltimore and Arizona. This is a
continuation off the last breakdown
which was a manager ejection. And in
that inning, we have bases loaded. It's
a two-run game. This breakdown is
brought to you by SeatGeek. We got an 0
and2 count to Holiday. And then he
fights that one off. Line drive caught
by Goreel. Throws it way away. So you're
going to have one runner score. And then
the other runners both moved up. Gore's
mad at himself. It was a nice catch. He
doesn't like the throw. He's very
frustrated. He should not let a runner
tag up on a ball in front of him when
you're the left fielder. That's what
he's upset about. But Mullins is fast
and he had a beat on the play. But wait,
hold on. Now, this is where it starts
getting confusing. The infielders are
saying, "We got him out. He didn't tag
up." And he's umpire saying, "Yeah, I
think I think so." And now everyone's
kind of confused and we got to figure
this out. Guriel's biting his necklace
just hoping that he did good. and not
bad. That his good was better than his
bad. Tyler O'Neal chewing on his gum,
hoping that he did good. Here's why
everything is so confusing. I have all
the umpires on the top of the screen and
we're going to watch the play play out
on the bottom of the screen. Notice when
he makes the catch, not one umpire
signals out. So, the base runners don't
really know what's going on. Did he
catch it? Did he not catch it? There was
never a call made on the field. Then the
throw is wild. A run scores. Does a home
plate umpire call him safe? No. No
signal there after the runner crosses
home plate. So we've had a lot of
movement and not one umpire has signaled
anything yet. Now Arizona says, "Wait,
hold up, hold up, hold up. He didn't
tag." So they throw the ball to third
and Suarez tags the runner then steps on
the base and third base umpire doesn't
say safe or out. He just goes like what
are you asking for? Oh that would be at
second base. So they throw it to second
base to see if he tagged up and this guy
says safe. Then they throw it back to
third base and go well hold up
something's wrong here. And they now he
calls him out. But earlier when Suarez
did that right
here, when he stepped on the base, he
didn't say out. Then they throw it to
second and this umpus says safe. And I
think the third base umpire's like,
"Well, okay, hold up. I wanted you to
fix the mess. I guess I'll just fix it
out." So they get off the field, but all
the umps are like, "What's what's going
on?" They didn't make any calls. He's
like, "Hey, what? Just let's just get it
right." Okay. Hyde is saying like,
"Well, who tagged?" He's like, "No, he
did tag." He's like, "Well, who didn't
tag? What's going on?" Brian Onora, home
play, just chomping his gum. He's trying
to keep up. It's hard. He's like, "Wait,
hold on." He turns to his dog. Did said
tag up? He's saying he tagged up and
he's like, "Yeah, okay. I think he did."
And then we do get an update from Liz
that they're reviewing it. Baltimore is
challenging the catch and the no tag up.
Basic challenging the catch and the no
tagup call. Guriel was like, "Uh, please
don't show the replay to the whole
crowd. I think I Let's not Okay, this
part's good. This is real good. I like
this part." Makes a nice grab. No doubt
about it. He caught that ball. He
slides. He catches it, comes up,
spinning, throwing. His pitcher sees
that replay. Let's
go. Yeah, nice grab, dude. Love it. And
he's like, "Yeah, but they're g they're
going to show the next part, which
is oh man." Which is not really good
because this
throw is quite
comical. It just spins, fires. Probably
no need to act that fast. Look at the
top left of your screen where this throw
goes. It hits the net on a fly. Here it
comes. Right there. Top left. Catcher
had a beat on it. tracks it down off the
ricochet, does allow the run to score.
He's like, "Man, I didn't need to do
that at all." Huh? Because he had a tag
up and he's like, "No." So Hyde comes
out and he's like, "They're saying that
the run didn't score." Which I don't
think they are saying that. But that's
what he thinks they're saying. They're
saying they're they're saying a didn't
tag up. And third like no, he did tag
up. Umpire's like, "What are we saying?
Who are we saying? What is it that we're
saying?" Tyler O'Neal's like, "I'll just
leave because I know I didn't tag up."
Gabriel Jr.'s staying on the field. The
rest of the Dbacks have come off the
field. No one else remains in their
position besides Guriel, who is like,
"Nah, I'll ride this one out. I'm going
to eat it out here in left field alone."
No one else is out there with him, just
by himself. He doesn't believe it until
he hears it from the umpires. And here's
a replay of the runners. So Cedric
Mullen's on third base. He does tack
right there. Gary Sanchez and Tyler Neil
both do not tag, but they never heard
the umpire say catch. So, as far as they
know, he didn't catch it. It's usually
how it works. This was bizarre. He tags
him and then steps on the base and third
base umpire is just like,
"Uh, no. I mean, ask that guy." Yeah,
ask that guy. He'll clear this up. They
throw it over there. He said safe. He
did not clear it up. They threw it back.
He said out. umpire's just like, "So,
what's going on, Brian?" Hey, then T
goes timing play. Yeah. So, either one
of them are going to be out. That's what
we're looking at. I thought you guys
were reviewing the run. That's why I
thought you came over here. You know,
that's why I sent it upstairs to
review it. So, Brandon Hyde thought that
they were saying Cedric Mullins didn't
tag up and the run was going to come off
the board. That's why he challenged. But
that's not what they were saying. He
gets back on the phone. He's like,
"Yeah, no. That's what Brian told me. He
just told me that that they're not
taking the run. He's like, well, this
guy tells him like, well, they never
made a call in the field. Brian,
Brian, Brian, hey, come here. Got to
talk to you,
please. Brian, Brian. Like, hey, hold
up. Hold up. Hold up. He's like, you
didn't make a call on the field. That's
the problem. Like, yeah, we know. We
know. We're in a bit of a mess here. We
don't know what the hell's going on.
Ultimately, they get a decision and they
come out and Laz explains it as so. It
is a confirmed catch. The battle runner
is out. Mullins tagged out at third. The
run scores. Ordino did not tag up at
second, so he will be out. The inning is
over. The run scores. Baltimore loses
his challenge on the catch, no catch.
Arizona retains theirs. Yeah. Why did
that take So, so now Gore's like, "Okay,
I can run off the field." But the weird
thing is Baltimore loses their
challenge. But it seems like he didn't
even know what he was challenging, what
he wasn't challenging cuz they never
made a call on the field on the catch or
was he safe at home. And then the other
it was all bizarre. It was very bizarre
and they ne and they never made the call
on the catch. So they kind of hung the
runners out to dry. Ultimately they got
it correct but they also got it wrong in
the process a decent amount. If you want

And yeah, go go go watch the confusion
and the chaos in live time. This was
bizarre. You got to make calls as as
they happen. I think I think that's part
of it. Dean's part of the whole gig.
