Centerfielder steals ball from left fielder, a breakdown
What Happened
In a tense, tied game in the top of the sixth inning, Tampa Bay Rays centerfielder Kevin Kiermeier makes a bizarre play that sparks a heated exchange with his teammate, left fielder Randy Arozarena. With a runner on third base and the game knotted at 1-1, Arozarena gets a good jump on a fly ball headed his way. However, Kiermeier, known as one of the best defensive outfielders in baseball, aggressively cuts in front of Arozarena, claiming he can make the play. Kiermeier gets behind the ball and fires home, but his throw is offline and the runner scores, giving the Oakland Athletics the lead. A visibly frustrated Arozarena stands and watches, shaking his head at Kiermeier's brazen move. Kiermeier, unrepentant, expresses complete confidence in his abilities after the game. "I'm the best defensive outfielder in the game," he declares. "I always tell my outfielders, if I can get to it, it's mine." Kiermeier explains that he believed he could catch the ball and make a strong throw home, which he feels would have given the Rays the best chance to throw out the runner. However, he acknowledges that Arozarena was in the right position and that his interference may have "hindered" the play. Still, Kiermeier makes it clear he will continue to aggressively go after any ball he can reach, even if it means cutting off his teammates. Arozarena, for his part, is left shaking his head at Kiermeier's brash attitude. The two outfielders have differing views on the play, but Kiermeier's unapologetic confidence shines through. He vows to have a conversation with Arozarena to clear the air, while standing by his belief that he is the premier defensive outfielder in baseball and that any ball in his vicinity belongs to him. The bizarre sequence leaves both players and the coaching staff seemingly perplexed, with the Rays trailing late in a close game. Kiermeier's unique skill set and unwavering self-assurance have created a tense situation, one that the team will need to navigate as they look to secure a crucial victory.

there's the runner on third this is the
state farm sign
look what happens it's pretty wild man
i've never really seen it that much
the center fielder runs all the way over
cuts him off
throws it home doesn't make the play
he's safe
the lead goes to oakland randy's saying
i got it i got it he gets behind it push
gets randy had his momentum ready to go
forward kiermeier goes no no no no no no
no no no i'll do it i'll do it even
though this ball's
to left field and i'm the center fielder
and then kier meyer's pissed because
randy didn't get out of his way
and randy's pissed because that's the
most embarrassing thing someone can do
to you
and just big league like that he's
shaking his head like okay
i guess what's this guy's problem the
next ball goes to center field
kiermeier catches it randy stays in left
field
like a natural left fielder kind of
normal and then they walks off
and it's just kind of the most big
league you can big league guy
ever throws his gum now he's not upset
about the optics he's upset because he
didn't make the play his
interview after the game about this
is just as bizarre as the play itself
listen in
i thought long and hard about this and
and i uh
you know gotta tread lightly uh with
with my wording on it i'm uh i'm in a
unique
position with with what my defensive
skill set is and i'll never
shy away from that i i believe i'm the
best defensive outfitter in the game
i'd put my talents up with with anyone i
don't know if you can say i gotta tread
lightly and then the next sentence is
i'm the best
outfielder in all of baseball but i mean
kier meyer is
really really really good defensive
outfielder like
very very good defensive outfielder but
i don't want to be like i'm a tread
lightly here
i'm the best there ever was i wake up in
the morning i piss excellence very
confident in saying that now with that
being said on the play
i always tell my outfitters especially
when there's a sac fly situation
i tell them hey if i can get to this
area i'm throwing
yeah so this area guys this area right
here that's all me if it's a sac fly
anywhere i can get
that's me that includes all the way to
the left of the state farm
sign i knew right away i could get
behind it
and get a re or uh you know work my
momentum back towards the plate
and you know from randy's standpoint
it's not a it's a play
you hardly ever see i've done it before
um
and it's worked in my favor back in the
minor leagues and i did it one time back
in st
louis with corey dickerson in there and
left and it was a very close play but
so yeah he remembers exactly that he did
this before corey dickerson and left
he gets out of his way lets him do his
thing same result
not the throws offline and not in time
but i have one of the best arms
in the big leagues and i've i've had
that since the day i've came here
so i mean hey one uh one
you got to respect the confidence and
cockiness there i don't know you can sit
down and be like i'm gonna tread lightly
here
i really thought out my answers i'm the
best there ever was i have the best arm
in the big leagues
and every ball in the outfield should be
mine if i want it
i think i caught randy off guard he uh
oh you think
dude uh you know kind of stood his
ground and that
that hindered my uh ability to get
behind the ball a little bit more than
than what i wanted rightfully so
so he's like yeah randy got in my way he
needs to get out of my way there
dude you jumped over him but then like
the good angel on his shoulders like
well rightfully so by randy he did
nothing wrong in that play whatsoever
once again i'm a playmaker out there and
i'm very confident in my abilities i
know
i could have done it if circumstances
were a little bit different
if randy didn't get out of my way i
would have done it i know that he's got
the right to be there
uh and you know but he hindered my play
but also i know he's got the right to
field his own position
but if he gets out of my way and lets me
field his position like i could have
done it
but once again um if anyone's at fault
it's me for for doing that i trust randy
in his ability but in them
no you don't moment right there
i was trying to to get to a certain spot
and and make a throw and
it didn't work out and i'm upset over it
with myself
if any other center fielders out there
um
you know might not be the right play any
other center fielder obviously they
don't do this but
me my unique skill set being the best
there ever was that i'm going to make
the play
i could have made that play and i'll
have a convo with him let the
let the dust settle i'm sure he's not
too thrilled with me and
he might not see eye to eye about it
forever and
i complete my case he complete his um
arm feels really good feels really
powerful and once again
if uh you know balls hit in the air and
i can get to it i want to throw and i
think that gives our
our team the best chance of winning and
i'll stand behind that any day of the
week so in the end
i'm going to keep doing this and i'm
going to let randy know he's got to get
out my way
dude i don't know how to think about
this it's so bizarre the play itself is
so
bizarre the interview is so bizarre like
kiermeier
is one of the best center fielders in
all baseball
but that doesn't mean like that's still
the correct play
but you got to admire his confidence and
maybe you don't admire his cockiness
but maybe you admire his truthfulness
but maybe you don't admire
his cockiness i really don't know the
only thing i do know he is good he goes
and gets balls
and tyler glass now loves it we had him
we had him
reacting it was like god damn it kev kev

so if you want to hear glass now talk we

or bet on him in a kuiper on the
