The Nationals win the 2019 World Series and celebrate, a breakdown
What Happened
The Washington Nationals defeat the Houston Astros in Game 7 of the 2019 World Series, winning their first championship in franchise history. Trailing by one run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Nationals fight back to tie the game and force extra innings. In the decisive 10th inning, Howie Kendrick hits a two-run home run to give the Nationals the lead and Daniel Hudson records the final out to seal the victory. As the Nationals' dugout empties onto the field, the players embrace and celebrate their hard-fought triumph. Veteran third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who has been with the team since its inception, is overcome with emotion, fighting back tears as he hugs his teammates. Outfielder Adam Eaton playfully battles with his glove, trying to keep it on his head as he joins the raucous celebration. Max Scherzer, the Nationals' star pitcher, is a central figure in the joyous melee, hugging and congratulating everyone in sight. Catcher Yan Gomes, who caught the final strike, pockets the baseball as a keepsake. Manager Dave Martinez, who guided the team through a tumultuous season, is ecstatic, dancing and high-fiving his players. The Nationals' triumph is especially sweet given their underdog status earlier in the season. As shortstop Trea Turner remarks, "We're not really kids, we're the oldest team in the MLB. Two outs to go and we fight back." Second baseman Brian Dozier celebrates by turning his hat backwards, a nod to his mid-2000s style. Throughout the celebration, the players express their love and gratitude for one another. As outfielder Juan Soto says, "We're the champions of the world!" The Nationals' improbable journey to the World Series title is a testament to their resilience, teamwork and sheer determination to overcome the odds.
