Strawberry Gets Ejected, Pete Rose Pinch hits himself and the Reds & Mets Brawl, a breakdown
What Happened
In a highly-charged matchup between the New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds on July 22, 1986, tensions boil over in the fifth inning when Mets outfielder Darryl Strawberry is ejected for arguing a called strikeout. Strawberry vehemently disagrees with the umpire's decision, drawing a line in the dirt with his bat and shouting "It wasn't even close!" before being tossed from the dugout. With the Mets trailing 1-0 in the ninth inning, first baseman Keith Hernandez hits a fly ball that is misplayed by Reds outfielder Dave Parker, allowing the tying run to score. Up next, Reds player-manager Pete Rose pinch-hits for himself, delivering a single to set the stage for a dramatic finish. Mets outfielder Mookie Wilson steals second and third base, bringing home the go-ahead run. But as Wilson slides into third, a confrontation breaks out with Reds third baseman Buddy Knight. The umpire rules that Wilson is safe, but Knight refuses to let him off the bag, leading to a heated exchange. Knight then punches Wilson in the face, sparking a full-scale brawl between the two teams. Reds catcher Gary Carter steps in, grabbing Wilson and slamming him to the ground. "Great assist, blue!" Carter tells the umpire. Fans start throwing objects onto the field and both Knight and Wilson are ejected from the game. In the aftermath, Mets pitcher Jesse Orosco and Reds pitcher Roger McDowell are forced to shuffle positions, with Orosco moving to the mound and McDowell to right field. The chaotic scene encapsulates the intensity of the Mets-Reds rivalry, with both sides refusing to back down in a game that sees a manager pinch-hit for himself and a bench-clearing brawl. Ultimately, the Mets emerge victorious, but the lasting image is of the two teams engaged in a wild melee, a testament to the passion and competitiveness that defined this era of National League baseball.

Click timestamps to jump to that momentlet's go back to July 22nd 1986 in
Cincinnati the Mets are in town and
everyone's pretty ornery Darryl
strawberry's up in the fifth inning
strike one is called strike twos called
he's not happy about it shaking his head
in disbelief and then the next one he's
cool that's a good call and then he gets
rung up doesn't like that at all still
thinks it's outside draws a line with
his bat in the dirt says that's the
wasn't even close wasn't even close
tensions are high from the start in this
game and that's what I'm showing you
here and of course a lot of you are
gonna want to have an opinion on whether
this was a striker ball even though
we're watching a potato with the bad
camera angle but there you go you can
leave your opinion below what do you
think was that striker their ball either
way
strawberry gets ejected from the dugout
for John and he's you you [ __ ]
you I'm gonna fight you
yeah i'ma fight you I'll punch you like
I just punched my arm boom
I'll be your head next time instead of
my own arm it'll stink face from the amp
cool little national league hat right
there throws the gear on back to the
game part two of this is the Mets are
one out away from losing the game
Franco's pitching Hernandez puts one
into gold Glover Parker's glove but it
dropped it instead of going into the
Gold Glove it just dropped damn it
dropped on the ground and the Mets tied
it up goddamnit Mets tied it up
Franco was not happy to bounce it like a
bouncy ball gotta be [ __ ] [ __ ] me
I think three gold gloves to his name
and that play maybe Rose had to fix in
next up player manager Pete Rose 45
years old pinch hits for himself says
you know what you [ __ ] you want
something done you gotta do it yourself
here I go gets out there gets ready okay
not great but then smacks one up the
middle how about that give me more
managers pinch hitting themselves gets
the first base looks for the UMP right
away says get me out of this [ __ ] and
where is he where is he where is he oh
he's over there oh there time blue okay
I'm done and that's how you [ __ ] do
it boys
go get him Davis steal a couple
bags I got to get back to managing what
a wild time
Davis is at first he is D go ahead
around he's the winning run he scores
they have a big ol walk-off celebration
and he's gonna snag some bags here he
goes boom he's off to second chooses a
great pitch to run on the curveball gets
there just fine calls time now he's
gonna try to get to third he's really
gonna put pressure on him and this is
where we get to part four of the video
big ole brawl he gets on third now
they're jockeying for space and Knight
just socks him right in the face watch
you gotta watch in slo-mo
first off great call by blue he was in
there he was safe now he's got his foot
on the bag and Knight is saying yeah but
this is my domain
I live here you're at my house you need
to get your foot off the bag Davis like
that's not how that works cuz then I'm
out I ain't no dummy
and then there's like hey dude get off
allow me to be on the bag and spoon
socks them right in the face
now the UMP Azzam wrapped up BAM right
in the face Knight used to be a boxers
amateur boxer I think something like
that so the UMP actually spins Davis
right into Gary Carter's hands Gary
Carter says thanks blue I got this from
here Slams Davis to the ground not a
good time for Davis here's another angle
BAM right to the face
throws a quick left third base Coast
presence of mind to pick up the batting
helmet great job coach and then Carter
thanks blue great assist I'll just take
him the fans start getting active they
start throwing stuff onto the field UMP
starts kicking fans out it was a whole
mess was a whole to do now I'm sure
gonna get together talk about it have
some fun be like what's going on here
they kick out Knight and Davis Davis
like hold up I stole third I got punched
in the face and then I got body slammed
why am I getting thrown out Petros like
I know I know I know let's go ahead to
our best real quick and and divide our
money up all right I like this shot all
the people are here and all their
belongings are here looking like
horseshit or birds just on the field a
lot of stuff over there and the craziest
thing is so Knight and Kevin Mitchell
get
ejected so they're out no I don't know
if Kevin Mitchell got a jacket or not
but night did so they move Roger
McDowell to replace night he comes in to
pitch Hearn replaces comes in to catch
and then Gary Carter moves to third base
Jesse Orosco comes in to pitch and then
from here or now as you can see Orosco
and McDowell just trade the pitching
mound and and right field or the
outfield because you know when the
opposite batter came up now they're
moving Mickey Mookie Wilson from left to
right and the pitcher from right to left
where there's gonna be less action the
Mets end up winning this game crazy
enough but what a wild one of the wilder
regular-season games from before I was
born
I guess 1986 just a lot going on I think
every manager should be allowed to
pinch-hit themselves in every game put
their money where their mouth is
I don't want managers starting just one
pinch it maybe per season what do you
think boonie
