Trent Grisham Pimps a HR off Kershaw and the Dodgers take exception to it, a breakdown
What Happened
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Trent Grisham of the San Diego Padres steps up to the plate against Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw. The Padres trail by one run in this pivotal divisional matchup. Grisham has a unique batting stance, with a slight hip movement to get his timing right. Kershaw delivers a 2-1 pitch and Grisham crushes it deep to left field. As the ball sails over the wall, Grisham lets out a big "Let's go!" and turns to his teammates in the dugout with a confident smirk on his face. The home run ties the game at 3-3 in the late innings. Grisham briefly holds up three fingers, indicating this is his 9th home run of the season. The Dodgers dugout takes exception to Grisham's celebration and they can be heard yelling at him from the field. Grisham yells back, though his exact words are unclear. As Grisham casually steps on home plate, the Dodgers' catcher approaches him and the two begin exchanging words. The benches begin to clear, but cooler heads prevail and no physical altercation occurs. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is clearly upset by Grisham's actions, saying in the post-game press conference: "I don't mind guys admiring the homer...but to over-kind of stay at home, play certainly against a guy like Clayton who's got the respect of everyone in the big leagues, I just took exception to that." Roberts suggests there is a "certain respect" that should be shown to elite pitchers like Kershaw, implying that Grisham's celebration was disrespectful. However, Grisham maintains that he was simply celebrating with his own teammates, not showing up Kershaw directly. This incident adds another chapter to the growing rivalry between the Padres and Dodgers, two of the top teams in the National League West. With both clubs fighting for division supremacy, tensions are high and player celebrations have become a point of contention. The Padres, who have been one of baseball's surprise teams this season, appear unfazed by the Dodgers' complaints, as they continue to play with a confident, unapologetic style.

trent grisham up at the plate
love his little rhythm to get in timing
love his whole presence in the box right
here
very casual very cool very calm very
collected a little hip
action will get in the rhythm rizzo does
that nice pitch by kershaw there to get
the count even loses him there 2-1
pitch is
hit hard let's go screams at his
teammates in the dugout then hits him
with the little smirk
now this is very crucial for me i think
there's nothing wrong
with what he did after the home run he
looked at his teammates he didn't look
at kershaw and show him up he just
looked at his
guys in the dugout cause he tied the
game in the sixth inning
and let out a huge let's go nothing
wrong with that
in my opinion the smirk though
did the dodgers talk first and then he
hit him with the smirk
or does he throw the smirk the smug face
on his own who cares really anyway he
holds up
three because that's his ninth home run
is what i read i don't really get that
kershaw's thinking damn it i just tied
the game in the sixth inning then he
holds up nine fingers there and he hits
him with another smirk
just dudes full of the smug smirk
so that's fine i guess and then the the
dodgers are yelling at him you can hear
it so he yells back i'm not sure what he
says here
it kind of looks like y'all
soft mother [ __ ]
soft but i don't think it's soft
maybe it's like i got you [ __ ]
gotcha
safe [ __ ]
safe [ __ ] salty
salty [ __ ] i don't know but
then you can you can hear the dodgers
just screaming shut the [ __ ] up shut the
[ __ ] up
as he casually jumps on home plate like
a little kid who just hit his
first little like home run
[Music]
and the catcher gets involved and
everyone's mad and he says let's go
let's [ __ ] go he's excited with his
team again
so it's a little bit of both dave
roberts didn't like any of it
this was his reaction that's not a
picture that's his actual
reaction to all of this just when still
honest and then here was his quotes in
the press conference afterwards
you know i i i don't mind guys uh
admiring the homer
you know certainly it's a big game big
hit but
i just felt that you know to to over
kind of
stay at home play certainly against a
guy like clayton who's got the respect
of everyone in the big leagues and what
he's done in this game i just took
exception that because i think that
there's a certain respect that you give
a guy that you know
you know if you homer against him
robert's just a little guy but he knew
as soon as he hit it so there you have
it
you can celebrate home runs if you hit
him off shitty pictures but if you hit a
home run off one of the best pitchers in
the game how dare you celebrate that
that's not even an accomplishment it
didn't even tie the game in the sixth
inning or anything
between two teams in a divisional race
baseball's got to get out of its own way
